upgrade dillema
well here goes. Im new her and came to this site looking for a fix to my center channel problems and found some great options. after reading posts for about 2 hours, I now have a bigger problem. the dreaded upgrade bug. my cs175i stopped working, I heard a little crackle then nothing. I am goin to take a look at it and if its repairable was thinking of using it as a rear center and buying a cs10 for my front center. my system consists of a sony dn-1000 reciever, sony 40" bravia lcd flat panel, and a ps2 and ps3. A movie music combo is what im looking for. speakers are bose 201 fronts cambridge soundworks 300s rears and rear center, polk psw 120 sub. my center was the cs175i. I will say sounded pretty well in the 11x12 room it is in and for all the mismatched speakers goin on. i really fell in love with polk speakers over the years but budget plays a big part in my slow process of HT success. my main question is, is the cs10 a formittable upgrade to the rest of my setup? (at least temporarily) and will the cs175i work well as a rear center if repaired? Any input would be greatly apreciated. thanks in advance

Okay, here goes....
1. First, make sure that it's not your receiver that is causing the problem (hook your center to another channel as see if it still isn't working) or check your wire and hookups. I kind of find it hard to believe that your speaker went and the receiver isn't the culprit.
2. A cs10 will not be a match for what you have there, but neither was the cs175i. I don't know what is a match for your speaker set...
3. Are you running a 6.1 setup? If your current center is blown and you get it fixed under warranty, I kind of feel your going down a dark road by placing an already mis-matched center speaker as a rear center (which you never get much sound from anyway) and placing a cs10 at the new center. If your current center is the problem and can be fixed, and you like the current sound, stay with what you have.
4. What people here are going to tell you is to start over with your front stage and replace with a matching speaker set so you start out right. They will have plenty of suggestions as to speakers to use, and Polk has a lot of choices in an inexpensive price range that you can find on their ebay site. Do that first, and then take care of the surrounds (if you want to).
5. If you have the "upgrade bug" I would not hang around here for hours on time.... I started similar to you with a inexpensive HT setup and was just looking to make some minor improvements.... That was a few months ago. I have since replaced everything I originally had and have already started planning for more upgrades in the future. People here will certainly get you into a much more pleasing sound experience, but your going to be spending some bucks!Pioneer vsx-9130txh-k

thanks guys, holt I am running a 6.1 setup and im sure its not the reciever because my old sony de895 had the same issue with my cs175i. I upgraded my reciever just a week ago to a sony dn-1000. i have an old speaker which i ran to both revievers and got sound. i'm going to ohm out the drivers to see where the problem lies. I am eventually upgrading my speakers starting with the fronts and was wondering which way to go first starting with the center speaker since that is the current problem. thanks for any help i can get on this.

If it is indeed the speaker that is bad, you can probably find a nice center speaker used on craigslist. Look for a CS400 and that will be a significant upgrade. I saw one listed on craigslist being discussed in another section of the forum. I think it was $100.____________________________________________________________
