I found my S-VHS tape in the closet and watched last weekend, I forgot I have it, the tape is probably over 10 years old, but it's one of the few was recorded and released in S-VHS, wide screen. Until this movie is released in DVD, the S-VHS version is the champ, video transfer is better than LD, clear as crystal, color is outstanding, can be used as reference tape, especially when you play it in the JVC HS 9800 and activate the DNR and TBC functions. This tape is one of the best. . The DPL II really helps to bring the action to live.

Awesome about the transfer Pete, too bad the movie itself sucks.

    ;)

I never new they released S-VHS movies. Majority of customers must have been JVC owners. Where'd you buy the tape at?

There is no such thing as S-VHS "tapes" - either you have a S video VCR or you don't.

No link there. A tape company may now or then market a tape as S-vhs simply because of the grade but
1)there is no difference if you do not have an S-VHS vcr
    and
2)no difference in quality over an HQ tape

If I remember it correctly, I ordered it through an outfit from CA, there are also about 4 other titles available at that time, I can't remember the name, but Paramount produced this tape.

What do you mean Scott? I used S-VHS tape to record regular TV shows every week, since it can record up to 400 lines horizontal resolution, I can watch these shows in high quality play back. On my JVC HS 9800, I can also record on S-VHS ET mode using the regular VHS tape and still get the same picture quality. The recorder also has the ghost reduction tuner and TBC built-in, very helpful. I also have the Pany with HD built in that I can record the same thing, compare both of the results, same quality of picture, except on the tape the audio is recorded in Hifi 2 channels and the DVD recorder, audio was recorded as DD 2 channels. S-VHS recorder and tapes still work for me, at least for now.

Looked it up - and they are marketed as SVHS tapes but it is just High Grade VHS tapes. I guess I have been out of the VHS loop for a long time now - about the DAY dvd came out. I have never seen a commercial movie marketed as a SVHS. 10 years ago a S-VCR ran about $800 bones. The S- video sends about double the lines of resolution to the moniter from the VCR and has very little to do with the tape being used - a standard HQ tape will yeild about the same benifits.
Anyway I learned something new - thanks.

Thanks for the info Peter - Pretty expensive tape for every day recording. I have the JVC4800U. :)

***Now Peter you got me going.......
How are you able to record in Svideo if the VCR only has an Svideo out to the TV. The signal you are recieving IN is still Coax cable - is the coax getting you a "S video" quality recording??????

I thought the movie is enjoyable, too bad you didn't like it, it has some breath-taking shots of the grand canyon, and what about the action scene with Indy on the horse and the tank ? You know I watch the movie " Golden Eye" last week too on my Pioneer LD, even though the video performance of the LD (after TBC and VNR) can beat the DVD, but the DD AC-3 track sure beats the heck out of the DD track on DVD.

Actually, on the real S-VHS tape, the tape material is better for the S-VHS recording, the only different in the structure is: inside the S-VHS tape, behind the flap (open when you insert the tape to the machine, there is a little hole, and the recorder read through this hole to recognize as S-VHS tape, you can cheat the machine by creating this hole yourself.

You can record or purchase a prerecorded tape in the S-VHS format. You would benefit only if you have an S-VHS player.
S-VHS offers 400+ lines of video resolution; VHS offers 250. Also, the manner in which the various video signals are recorded is different. If you watch a tape recorded in S-VHS on a 'regular' VCR, the picture will most likely be .. not that great. The audio is recorded the same, so audio performance will be as expected. An S-VHS player will play VHS tapes.

Blank tapes sold as "S-VHS" tapes supposedly have magnetic particles at higher density, allowing it to record the extra signal. However, changes in the S-VHS system (including mechanics) allow quality VHS tapes to be used successfully when the case is modified.

A primary advantage to S-VHS is that copies, and copies of copies, show a much slower degradation rate between successive generations than VHS. If you have a lot of editing to do, S-VHS is the way to go.

Okay, Scott, on the regular TV programming, either you have cable or not, the video signal quality that the TV tuner or VCR tuner received (via your coax or antenna) is about 300 to 350 line depending on how good of the signal that they received. This signal is still a whole lot better than the maximum of the regular VCR/VHS can record (240 lines). So if you utilize the S-VHS tape and record it off of your VCR tuner, you still get better picture quality than the regular VHS can produce. It won’t be as good as the true S-VHS (400 line), but it’s sure the heck better than the VHS quality.

Well, go shopping around town, you find down you can get a real bargain on these tapes, the last time I shop at Target, they clearance out all of S-VHS tapes for 89 cents a piece (T-120), and 99 cents for the T-160, and they are excellent quality Maxwell XR_S tapes. I bought two dozen, but I know I never can use all of them, because I still using the first two tapes over and over after over a year.

If you have a good source like Satellite (with Svideo out). Then you have a S-Video input to you VCR like mine. I have all my video sources SVideo'd in to my Receiver and have an output go to TV and VCR.

I also recently streamlined all my video to Svideo because I upgraded my reciever. Its cool because everything goes into the reciever and then only one out to the tv. Now I can play all my sources on a single input channel and have "live" menu from the Onkyo. Its very nice.
I have yet to see a SVHS that has a SVideo IN. But it would make sence to get real quality SVHS recording from like a satellite reciever.

Oh no, I think Lucas try to sell them as the "sixpack" after he completes the third one unless his wife get mad at him on something, you may see them before that.
