Sony preamp help needed

I have an older model Onkyo pre that was not a cheap model when new. I wanna use it in a garage rig. But I have noticed that it does not switch between inputs correctly sometimes. Like it hangs or switchs really slow, or doesn't switch at all. I am not talking about the knob position hanging, just won't switch from CD to tuner sometimes for example, even though the knob is moved.

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe its a cheap fix? I really don't have the cash for new/used pre. I do have a really old Pioneer receiver with preouts I guess I could use though in its place.

    Not sure why I put Sony in the title, it's actually an Onkyo preamp. :confused:

    Is it a remote control model or not? If it is not, then its probably dirty contacts. If its a remote model, there may be a motorized rotary switch that needs oiling and contact cleaning.
