M40's vs M30's Surrounds

What do you guys think? Is there that much of a difference when it comes to home theater? I've got monitor 70's up front and my cs2 is on its way. Future plan is a 7.1 receiver with two outputs going to the monitor 70's in the front instead of running an amplifier.

Will monitor 40's be that much better in the rear or are monitor 30's fine? I mainly watch action movies. Rambo, terminator, etc.
Towers: Monitor 70's
Center: CS2
Rears: Monitor 30's
Sub: MicroPro 3000
Receiver: Pioneer VSX-D409
Screen: Samsung 42" 720p
All in a 12x12 bedroom...

I have a similar set up as you do.

I have Monitor 70's up front along with a CS2 and I have Monitor 30's in the rear.

Lots of folks on here really like the Monitor 40's as well.

The big difference in my decision was that the M 30's had a slot on the back to wall mount them, where as the M 40's apparently do not.

I can't speak to the sound of the M 40's but my M 30's sound pretty good.

So, if you're considering wall mounting the rear speakers, the M 30's are a good choice.

    Good luck.

Iwent to the monitor 30 because of size constraints with the 40's and because Newegg was running a great deal on them. I certainly like the 30's....

What kind of floor stands are folks using for Monitor 40?

You can hang the 40's on the wall you just need a strong bracket and so long heavy duty screws and put the port at the bottom and get some 2inch rubber stops to put on the back so your port will have some room.I know they say you need around 6 inches away from the wall but really that is because of the low bass ,but if you run the as sur-rounds ,you will have them crossover higher .This may void the warranty tho. They do make wall mounts that big if you want to go that way,but the 30's is not a bad sounding speaker for sur-rounds.

I think they should sound very similar being from the same line. 40s will go a little lower but that's probably not too important as rear speakers. Just my opinion which is worth what you paid for it. :D

Another reason I went with the 30's as opposed to the 40's, was the sheer size difference.

I knew I would be hanging these on the back wall, and the 30's were larger than my previous rears, so I was a little worried that they might even be too big.
I posted pictures of my setup in the system showcase if you want to get an idea on what the M30's look like on the wall.

I think the 30's look quite large on the wall, the 40's would really stick out like a sore thumb. Unless you have real large rooms and high ceilings.

    Just my stupid two pennies........................

I also love my 40's as surrounds. If you have the space the extra cash for the 40's is worth every penny. They are wall mountable (with a little effort) and are hard to beat IMHO for surrounds.

You can wall mount the M40s using PinPoint AM40 side clamping mounts. Some very well meaning, intelligent, and probably handsome, person posted a step-by-step right here on this very board.

You'll get a slightly better range from them compared to the M30s (55Hz to 25KHz compared to 47Hz to 25KHz), as well as a bit more power (125W compared to 100W) it depends on what will be powering them. If your receiver only puts out 100W per channel, then the 30s are fine, but if it can do 125, mine as well go for the bigger ones, you know you want to anyway.

Since few receivers will put out their rated power to all 5 or 7 channels simultaneously, power handling is not an issue. And since the auto calibration will likely suggest a low frequency cutoff of 80hz or higher, the 8 hz better response will never come into play either.

If he wants the 40s, he should go for them. Buy realistically, the sonic benefits as rear or surround speakers are probably negligible.

Nail, head, hammer. Great post. Having said that, I love my 40's as surrounds and they were worth the extra $, IMHO.
