hey guys, need advice. first, i own an onkyo tx-sr503,it decodes dolby ex, pro logic iix, dts es discrete, dts96-24, neo 6,and has 75 watts x7. i have it hooked to dcm tf 400 fronts. kef carinasII rear, polk psw10 and boston vr-mc center. a mishmash i know, but living on a va disability check, you do what you can. my question is, should i expect a great deal of difference if i bought a 5-600 dollar craigslist yamaha or denon hdmi receiver. again it would be a budget stretcher, but if it were to be an epiphany, i could do it. thanks.

The HDMI is only going to do you good if you have a HDTV.. if you're still using a standard def TV then the HDMI isn't going to help you one bit.., and even still most TVs can still accept a HD signal via analog.. my old Mitsubishi HD rear projection did HD over analog just fine. IF you are going to be going a bluray route however the answer would be different as you need the HDMI to get the full Dolby TRUHD and DTS HD, but if no blue ray then In terms of sound quality I wouldn't expect to see too much difference as your current AVR was a $500 receiver a few years back.Main 2ch -

You can only get un-compressed audio out of HDMI on blu-ray. It also gives you the benifit of newer surround sources such as Dolby TruHD and DTS Master Audio.
It is worth it IMO. -
You can get all DD, DTS and the new HD formats through analog outputs if your player internally decodes them. HDMI is NOT the only way.(3) PS3's, Xbox 360, (2) Wii's and Nintendo NES

Not completely true. HDMI can help you a few bits. You can still use an AVR that accepts HDMI as a source controller. Even if you won't output to the TV via HDMI, you can still accept your sources input via HDMI. So it still helps with cable management as well as decoding of the audio in the AVR in case you have a BR that doesn't on its own.
One hdmi cable from your DVD, one from your xBox, one from the cable box, etc. No mussing with separate analog RCAs, or component cables, etc from your sources. Then you just connect the AVR to your TV with the output that works for you (i.e composite, S-Video, component). Note sime AVRs do have limits no what outputs you can use based on the inputs used so be sure to read the manual if that's a great concern.____________________

good points... however I think in his situation.. unless he has need for that type of cable management.. he may not need to get HDMI right now.. I guess we need to know more about the type of components he has and not just the AVR and speakersMain 2ch -

Absolutely! I'm running analog 5.1 from my Oppo BD-83 & it's superb. On some of the other forums (more HT geared than 2 channel) a lot of folks prefer the analog sound quality over the sound quality from HDMI. I think HDMI is still pretty gimmicky & not nearly perfected yet."2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up. -
i hear you guys i think.i have hi def tvs, no blu ray yet, it sounds like br would be the better money spent right now to replace my old lg upconvert dvd. maybe later the cash will be there for a little higher quality receiver. i have never been that impressed with pq of blu ray over upconvert if taken into consideration by itself, but which brand, price point etc. they really do seem to be a huge pool of moderately priced br players and then a lot more money before a noteworthy jump in performance.humpty dumpty was pushed

If you go the blu-ray player route, make sure it has 5.1/7.1 analog outs and can decode the HD codecs internally. This will get you the high def sound without needing a high def receiver. You would then run HDMI directly to the TV not the receiver.
There are MANY BD players well under the price range you mentioned. The best one right now may be the Oppo if you want new. I also like the Panny BD players. The used market would open up your options quite a bit more. -
