Dell replaced my HDs!

I have to give Dell a word of praise. With just 4 days left in my 1 year warranty on a Dell Studio 540 my HD array started giving me problems. I logged in to Dell site and looked for help/support. After chatting online with a tech support guy he confirmed I had a couple of sick drives, he said Dell would ship replacements to a local tech and the tech would contact me to install the drives in a few days. The next morning I got a call from the tech to set up an appointment for that morning. The tech installed the drives this time as a mirrored array rather than a stripped array. Now I only have 600GB rather than 1.2TB but having a realtime - all the time mirrored backup has it's upside. This has been a wonderfull computer and aside from the currupt drive it has been a joy to own. I will certainly look to Dell again when it is time to buy another computer! For the first time in my computing history I had a decent back-up by way of a external 500 GB USB HD. For the last year I had moved my family pictures and music library to the external. After reinstalling the OS and all the applications I use, both local copies and downloads, I just pointed Itunes to my music folder, and Picassa to my pictures folder and all is well.
BACK-UP TODAY!

Glad you had a good experience.

unfortunately for every bad experience you hear of, there are thousands (literally) of good ones like tx_polkheads that you never hear of. Dell sells more pcs than anyone else in the world, so in actual numbers they will have more failures. Percentage wise they're not any higher than anyone else. All the major parts are from the same manufacturer as anyone else, and just in time too. None of the parts are stored for more than a few days.

Very few companies will give next business day (plus shipping) warranties with their products. You get a computer from best buy and you get a warranty on it? Good luck seeing it back in less than 3 weeks.

It's not? It's identical data on two drives. A mirrored array lets you replace the failed drive, and rebuild the array.

May not be the best type of backup, but it's much better than nothing.

Ask anyone who's had two drives fail simultaneously in a corporate environment, and they'll agree with me :p
