8-9 FT fro the fronts and centre and 20 Ft or so for the rears.

    Hi,

You can determine the gauge by taking as snippet (say, 6" or so), skin the insulation off and see what fits in a wire gauge meter. Some retail outlets have them (radio shack used to, hardware stores, etc). You see what fits in the appropriate hole. Alternatively, take that snippet and match with spools of speaker wire for sell. The gauge is always listed on the spool label (beware if it is not...).

You seem to have two issues underway here: 1) Is the wire too old and 2) whether or not the run is sufficiently long as to create non-trivial losses for the gauge you are using.

About 1), carefully look over the wire within its clear vinyl insulation. Is there any sign of corrosion? Any wire color beyond a pristine copper color (as evidenced in your photo) is bad ... dump the cable.

About 2), the wire gauge will result in increased resistance as the wire run becomes longer. Measure the exact run between the amp and the connections to the speaker (e.g. trace out the exact path) and compare with the amount of loss that is acceptable. Typically a 12 gauge wire will work well for 100 ft or more. Expensing it is more often or not a waste of money for, say, 30 or 40 ft. See http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm for more reading on this topic.

    Hope this helps!

    Hillbilly.

I don't know if you can tell, since photos makes cables look thicker than they really are.

If your sure i will take your word for it lol....for a 16AWG is not as thick as i though it would be. Compared to monopice 16AWG the copper part seems thicker. anyway if its 16AWG i have then i don't need to upgrade lol.
