hey guys, i know this is a polk site and all, so opinions may be weighed unequally but i need to know someone's sincere opinion... I have recently purchased two monitor 60's from newegg for about 100/each, they sound pretty nice... However, I was offered by a friend a pair of used Boston Vr965's for $230, I have the 10" polk subwoofer already and the bass is nothing to complain about... should i substitute the bostons with the polk monitors? please let me know, thx!! I don't know much in the field of acoustics so would need more help than the normal guy in here i guess...

    WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!

I'm not familiar with that model Boston? Do you have pics or some specs? Because it would be easier to make the comparison that way...? Thanks!

I looks like the Bostons might have a built in sub? In any case the VR tweeter is IMO superior to M, TSI, and RTI Polk tweeters so I would definitely consider the Bostons if you like their sound. I've hear some VR towers and they were very very good.

The best way to decide is have your friend bring them over and get your ears on them, in your system. Whatever sounds best, to you.

would age come into play since the bostons are used and the monitors are new...?

That tweeter was used until the mid decade of 2000 so I don't think that's much out of date...some vintage speakers actually sound better than current offerings...let me give you an example...that set of Bostons sounds much better than the current entry towers that retail for 500 a pair and only use the kortec tweeter which is lower on the Boston food chain?

How old are these, do you know? You should check them out to see that they work and look for any surround deterioration if the speaker surrounds are foam surrounds..

If they have a powered 8" sub see if the amp in there is working and you'll be fine....lots of people buy used....according to your link these were originally 2000 dollars a pair so if ther are working 230 is pretty much a steal.

I would think those Boston's would sound much better. I almost bought a pair of VR970's back in December used for $350. Make sure the power amps in each cabinet are working. I have read that many have had problems with those amps in the 960, 965 and 970 models.

I used to own those exact Bostons....and wish I still did own them.... I am a huge fan of Boston and have owned just about a speaker in every line at some point....except for the last few years as I think they went downhill. However the new VS line is absolutely amazing sounding so they are back on the up and up. Those Vr965's should not even be compared to the monitors in all honestly. They better compare with larger RTI's or even LSI's. Do what others say and check the built in amp to make sure they are still ok. If they are....fork over the cash and laugh al of the way home because you got a hell of a deal. The Lynnfield tweter in those is fantastic and VERY detailed. You will hear things from those speakers that the Monitors only dream of.

Never be afraid of buying used gear. A lot of people tend to overlook used....which I love because I reap the rewards!!!!!

Good luck!! If you don't buy them...give me the guys number...I'll take them off his hands.....

you guys, i got those speakers based on your reviews, apart from a little hole in the speaker sock, the functional parts are all fine. now, since they have additional LFE jacks in the back, how would i connect them with my receiver (no LFE jack, only pre amp out), and powered sub (also with LFE and line inputs)? and what about the crossover freqs? i know that someone in this thread had those speakers, just wondering what his configurations are?? thanks guys!
