Close call for my 1C's

For the last couple of months since purchasing my 1C studios, I've had them in our recently converted garage on a very thick pad and carpet. They are placed against the insulated garage door wall to get the best shot at the SDA effect (gives me 8' 9" of space between them). Since recently posting a question about bass response, I've been meaning to cut a piece of granite (left over from our kitchen remodel of 2 years ago) in two pieces to use as a foundation for the speakers. I finally got the slab over to a friend who as a diamond blade and picked them up around 5pm this evening.

Well, out here in San Diego, we rarely get rain and when it does rain, it is usually not something to write home about but it is RAINING HARD out here and will be all week. The rollup garage door has a rubber seal on the bottom and we've never had water come in........until tonight. I had the speakers on the granite slabs not more than 2 hours before I saw water the whole length of the garage door about 5-6" in, right where my 22 year old DRY particle board speakers would have soaked it up in an instant. Thank God I got those slabs down when I did!!!!

BTW, I haven't driven them hard yet with their new foundations but so far I am hearing a bit more depth. Can't wait for the kids to get to bed so I can crank them!

May want to play the lottery!

On a side note...where the hell do you get granite? I went to Home Depot and Lowes, and they contract out...I was hoping to get some warped or unusable piece. Is there some big name store that would have it cheap?

I got a large number of granite (and marble) pieces for free from a local stone store that used to have a dump pile with leftover pieces. I think they've started charging some for this sort of thing now - probably due to the economy. So, soliciting the mom and pop operations may be your best bet.

 Close call. I am here in Sunny Cali as well. NorCal. Not quite as much water as SoCal. Wodering if Ceramic Tile would have the same Effect as Granite. Have a bunch left over from our kitchen counter.

Glad to hear you 1Cs are OK. Keep an eye on that water, to make sure it doesn't continue to "rush" your speakers.

Regarding granite, I have been thinking about putting my 3.1TLs on a couple of pieces. I am not sure if it makes sense though. I have carpet underneath the speakers right now. I have them spiked, but also have the pads to sit them on for hardwood floors. Would it be worthwhile to get some granite and put them on it with the spikes and pads? Or, would this be adding an extra surface that I really don't need? The reason I ask is I have been messing with speaker alignment a lot recently and have been moving them around a lot. It's difficult to do with the spikes in the carpet, and having them on the pads on a solid surface would make it much easier. But, I was wondering if it would also improve the sound?

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

When we did our kitchen remodel, we went to several granite resellers locally. They have basically a parking lot fenced off and have slabs of different kinds of granite that you can choose from. Once installed, they cut out the opening for the sink and what was left over was a perfectly sized granite slab which when cut in two pieces were just right for the 1C's.

You won't find granite at the big box stores. You've got to go to a specialized place and hope they have scraps.

Not sure. The granite is 1" thick and provides a very solid platform. Not sure if ceramic tile on carpet would be as stable or provide a solid enough platform....it might even break if the surface underneath it is to squishy. Never hurts to try it out and see if you notice a difference.
