is this thing worth my time/effort?

I've been offered what is described as the following:

A piece of furniture that plays records and has those "tubie thingies" from sometime in the 50s or 60s (or earlier) for free.

One catch- I have to pick it up and haul it out. Is it worth my time? They claim it works, but it's been stored in their attic for a number of years. If I take it, I pretty much have to keep it.... I doubt the trashman would appreciate having to haul it away (plus, once I have it (even if it doesn't work) I won't be able to part with it. I can't bear to think of stereo equipment being smashed to bits).

Worth my time???

heh.... my mind is running circles around itself...

I think I'm gonna stop in tomorrow afternoon and look at it... maybe test it out if I can, and make measurements to see if it'll fit in my car. They're friends, so I'm sure they'll give me the honest lowdown on why they stuck it up in an attic...

That's the predecessor to the boombox, some of the later models included a 8 track.

Can you say T-R-A-S-H? I thought so.

What is it? Pics? More description? I think I know what we are talking about but F1s comment makes me think else.

    rs,

What I meant was that it had multiple functions, turntable, radio, sometimes a tv set and possibly a 8 track, but it was in a piece of furniture called a console. Being a all-in-one kinda thing, I compared it to a boombox.

At one time Scott amps and tuners were placed in a cabinet or heavy piece of furniture. They didn't like the look of separates at the time. If that cluncky thing has a set of those in there, you will have some nice gear.

Take it. Sometimes you get a real gem. You can always remove the tube amplifier, take a pic of it and put on ebay. A lot of people want that stuff!

Unfortunately, I got the word today that the guy wants to have an auctioneer look at it to tell him if it's worth anything before he gives it away. This is all hinging on what the auctioneer says, now. I have no idea if it's in working condition, but if it really has a tube amp, it's mine...

The way this was described, it's basically a table. I've seen them before... the only way you can tell it's a stereo system is sometimes you can see the outline of 2 6x9s in the front. there's a false top that lifts up to reveal the actual components. I haven't gotten a chance to see this particular one, but my grandmother has one that I've seen before.

My dad said that these things sometimes had some really nice stuff in them, as was stated before. IE- Garrard turntables, Scott amps, etc...
