7.1 in a small area

Was wondering how other people set up their 7.1 system in limited space. My couch is right up against the rear wall so i didn't have room for rear surrounds behind it, or much room for side surrounds. But this is the best setup that i could come up with. The small satellites are above the couch pointed down and out at a slight angle for the rear surrounds. Side surrounds are on the side but are very close to the couch so they are pointed in towards the room so they don't fire directly towards the listening area.
HT basement room:

Speakers:
Front- Polk RTi A3
Center- Polk CSi3
Side Surround- Polk RTi4
Back Surround- Polk RM6750
Sub- Outlaw Audio LFM-1 EX
Bedroom:
32in Visio LCD, Sony STR-DE685 AVR, MTX Monitor 12, Sony 5 disc DVD changer

IMHO, a well setup 5.1 will outperform a cramped up 7.1 anyday. In a smaller room it is easier to get good sound by setting a 5.1 correctly than trying to squeeze in another 2 speakers that you probably won't even be able to tell are there, that and those RTi4's will probably drown out those RM6750's anyway. If it sounds good to you that is all that matters though. Welcome to Club Polk.

Agreed, especially due to the fact that you can't actually have speakers *behind* you. You're definitely not seeing any benefit from the surround rears, so you're simply better off leaving it as a 5.1.

Now, a small room in and of itself isn't necessarily a limiting factor. I have a small room too, but due to the fact that I'm using rolling chairs (rather than a couch against the wall), I'm able to have proper speaker placement, including the surround rear speakers in the back. As such, I have definitely noticed a nice difference on properly encoded material. Even on standard 5.1 soundtracks it can make a difference.

I can't think of anything to add to this. My thoughts exactly.
