I have an H/K AVR 1600 that has no amp pre-outs. I believe you have to buy the 3600 model to get them, which is significantly more expensive. Is there a way to add an external amp without amp pre-outs? I'd love to power my RTi-A7's with an external amp. Is there a way to get around this or is getting a new receiver the only option?

You could use one of the outputs on your AVR, such as tape out, and get an integrated amp instead of just a power amp by hooking the tape out from your AVR to the tape input on the integrated amp.

or sell your 1600 and use the money to find a good used one that has pre outs. There is plenty of decent used stuff out there you just have to find it.

There is no way to do it and still get the good sound quality you desire. Sell it off and buy another one.

You can get receivers with pre-outs for less than $500. The Yamaha 663 (if you can still find one) was going for around $330 on Amazon right before Christmas. You do not need to go into the thousands of dollars to get this feature/function.

Dude let me help you out on ebay i just bought a HK 325 which has pre outs for 160 even.

Also on ebay there selling A LOT of the AVRs 247 which has HDMI if your into that.

both those models have pre-outs and sound KICK ****.

My avr 325 sounds NIGHT and DAY better then my old Yamaha RX-V463. So much better that i may not even need to add in an amp : P (will do it any way.)

Check out Ebay Harmon Kardon sells all there refurbs there just like Polk and they come to your house Like NEW.

My advice would be to stay with the Harmon Kardon brand I've heard most of the other brands and H/k is now on my short list.

That's what I was wondering. I love the H/K sound. I've had other brands, but the H/K just has something pleasing to my ears. I may go for a 247 since I like to do HDMI switching. I have an H/K AVR 254 that is excellent, but a little outdated (no hdmi).

    Thanks everyone for the input!

I m not sure how much you have used Ebay but just a warning don't get caught up in getting THAT ONE, theres always more and if you get caught in a biding war you will end paying more then you should of or wanted too.

Just give it time took me a week to win a bid but it saved almost $50 cash.

Snowdog, check your other Harman, if it's an HK AVR 254, then it definately has preouts and HDMI. This is a very nice receiver and what I would look into getting if I were in your situation. HK's make very nice pre-amps. Welcome to the club.

Yeah, I had a brain **** on the model number. My old one is a 225 (no hdmi). I'm checking out the harman ebay store and waiting for the right one at the right price. Thanks for all the help!
