An Asian marketplace just opened near my house, a nice big one like on Buford Hwy in Atlanta.

Anyway, I've been making excuses not to get a nice Asian cookbook so now I have no excuse not to get one.

Can anyone make a recommendation of one they like? I mainly like Chinese, Thai, and Japanese, but I definitely want to expand to Korean and Vietnamese.

Thanks,
Wes

Since Asian is such a broad scope of flavors and cooking styles / techniques perhaps Charmaine Soloman's Asian Cooking might be a good place to start. It's been in print for 30 years. Friend of mines wife calls it the bible for asian cooking.

While perhaps not the Holy Grail, she loves it and says its a good way to get started.

    Hope that helps.

    Bill,

The Lee Lee Asian Market is at La Cholla and Orange Grove, northeast corner across from the NW Hospital.

It's in one of the old grocery stores from the 70's or early 80's, 40-60,000 square feet. Compared to that store on Oracle near Rudasill, this place is like a Fry's Marketplace vs a Food City!

Nguyendot, do you recommend any other stores beside the big one at 25th & Military? Just curious, as that's the one we are familiar with.

The Cao Nguyen super market there is the best. You can find some different varieties at the Chinatown supermarket just south of there on Classen as well.

There isn't much Super Cao Nguyen doesn't have. There's one on the south side too but it doesn't compare.

Any yes.... my mom is a walking talking Vietnamese cook book. She could probably cook a different meal every night that's Vietnamese without ever consulting a recipe.

Unless you like a particular chef's style, there are about a billion free recipes on the web if you do a little digging.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Okay, figured I'd check with a pro.
    Super-Cao is where we go.

    Oh man, a jingle.

Yeah, I think we checked the Southside one on Penn one time. Had a few different items, but definitely not in the same league.

We're not a rice every night family, but I scored a used Zojirushi (sp) Bigboy 10 cup cooker off CL a few months ago. It was in Electronics, of all places, and I'm thinking, "Great, another CL noob can't find....waitaminit", checked around Amazon prices and snapped that puppy up for a song.

Man, I was so sick of that black & decker piece of junk. Even once a week was too much it would spew that rice starch goo all over the counter.

Yeah I have one of those too. It sits on the floor. I scavenged parts from it for my 12 year old cooker. It keeps rice for 5 days with no problem ;)

Wow. You leave it on Warm all that time? Or shut it off? Either way, that's amazing.

For a rice cooker, get a National (Panasonic)....they do not ever break.

I'm sure there are, but I didn't really want to blindly buy a cookbook and end up hating all the recipes. The folks around here usually come through for odd requests like this....
