I was reading in the other thread that sl12xx and sl1300 were good entry level, I wonder if the 1700 also enjoys the same recommendation... I found one at a reasonable price, but if it sucks,I'll pass on it. Just wanted the experts opinions before I commit. Thanks in advance, Tal

I have a 1300 and my father in-law has a 1700 and they look identical. What is a reasonable price ?

40 bucks. Seemed more than reasonable for a decent (or better than decent) TT since I have paid more than that for crappy ones in the past. But I am tired of buying things, and I want to get stuff that I can hang onto for a bit...

$40 is a good deal if it works and can hold a constant speed. There is a owners manual at vinylengine.com.

DOes it come with a cart and headshell ? Can you listen to it before buying.

I bought my 1300 from original owner who had it serviced and checked out for $90 with a working although old cart.

Yes on the cart, I don't know what a headshell is (dustcover?) But I can try it first

Headshell is what the cart mounts to that is connected to the tonearm. Headshell is removable. Make sure you read up on cart alignment. If you have a microscope look at the stylis and clean as required.

    Lots to learn about TTs.

You might find this link helpful! I have owned a few of the Technics Direct Drive turntables and they are quality units, cartridge selection is important and often the most costly part of acquiring a used turntable. Good luck.

If it doesn't hold constant speed, dirty speed (pitch) adjustment pots are frequently the culprit on old Technics tts. This is (usually) easily rectified with a schpritz of CAIG DeOxit and giving the pots a good workout. I don't know about the DD Technics (as I recall the SL-1700 is DD, yes?) but many of the belt drives have two sets of speed controls -- there's a fine adjustment on the outside, accessible to the user, but also a pair of pots inside (drop the bottom to access, at least on the ones I've worked on) to set speed ranges. All four (if so equipped) need cleaning.
