I just opened mine and was a little surprised. 53.97%. I haven't checked my IRA yet but I believe it's in the same range.

I put every thing I could into mine last year. Something about buy low-sell high. I'll look at it after the recession is over.

I have a private manager for one account and a company managed allocation for the other...would this % be on my yearly statement? I barely pay attention to this stuff...its awful.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Too bad my 401k isn't individual stocks. My IRA, which is, seemed to give me 77% return rate. Good to see times are getting much better.

It should be. I had to calculate my IRA rate myself but it was easy since I don't make any contributions there, it's my previous 401k that I transferred over.

Very good for 2009, but it doesn't make up for the slide from 2007 thru 2008.

does your employer contribute to your 401k? mine doesn't and hasn't for a year. so I had to bump up my monthly contributions. the modest gains right now for me are nowhere close to where I was pre 2007.

eh I did I thought well with 52%. The way our company does it, you do your own contribution what you want, then have a choice of stocks, and other things you can place your money into. I'm always the stock route and managed to do alright. The one thing I don't like is they have pre selected choices for stocks, for example I can't just say I want apple, its more general and I don't care for it. Wish I had done more as I saw some very good months but overall happy. They will then add in some contribution at some point based on what I did, so I'll see a bit more which doesn't hurt.

It was about 42%, then i pulled it all out and bought stock in the company i work for instead. And now, every week, i have it set up that whateverwas going into my 401k, buys stock.

Considering that the stock went up over $20 a share this year... i'm ok with that. :)

What 401K funds pulled in 40 - 60% ? last year? Were these bond funds....just curious.

Honestly, i don't really know anything about it, other than i was dumping in 10%, and my employer was matching up to 6%. Like Doro, i'm bad about keeping track of that stuff, and i don't really worry about it much. I had no idea how much was in there when i went to pull it.

And i really only pulled it because i noticed how cheap stock was at my company, and because i'm a young stupid kid that didn't stand to lose a whole lot in the grand scheme of things.

I probably didn't make much more money this way, and probably won't overall, but it's just more fun to see that banner and calculate how much i made a day. :D

2009 saw modest growth....but not enough to make up for the 2008 losses.

I have a new retirement plan...

Statement of fact - over time stocks will always generate returns of (insert figure here - 12% is usually stated)

Well guess what, I don't really care about "over time." The only period I care about is the 15-20 years after I tap into it when I need it.

Said another way, if I live forever after I retire, I should realize 12% returns. Cool - I don't plan on living forever.

I can say over the last 12 years I've generated average returns of -21%. That is to say, I never got back to where I was in 1998.

So I'm cashing out of my 401k, penalties and all, in about a year but have a unique situation where I can generate 12-13% with no risk, so I'm going for it.

    James,

Well, you saw my past 12 year performance of -21% per year so I started thinking a little differently.

I own this business paying about $5000 per month rent. So I'm seriously thinking about cashing out of my 401K currently valued at about $300k and buying/building my own facility.

With what I net and a small mortgage, I should be able to trade a $5000 rent bill with a roughly $1000 mortgage plus taxes and utilities and such.

There's different ways to cash out of 401k's but that is the general concept.

Exactly. I answered the question without really reading. Since its inception, I think I am down 0-10%.

No. I was just trying to see how well we are rebounding. I don't think many of us are back to where we began before the slump but it's getting close. If things continue like this, 2010 we will be back and over.

You know the old saying Sami...When your at the bottom, there's only one way to go. If you consider 6500 in the DOW the bottom, today hanging out around 10,600, then most have started to gain back their losses. 2010 may be good for wall street, but it's main street with the problems. I fear another down trend unless consumer spending picks up and with the unemployment situation as it is, don't see any significant gains untill they can get that lower.
