Hi Polk fans!
Just thought I would use my first post to say "Hi" to you all, and sort of introduce myself.

I have been a browser here for a while, but figured it was time to register as I have questions, comments, and the like.

At the moment I am running a pair of Monitor 10s ( I have a set of perfect S10s in the closet), with a pair of Adcom GFA 565 monoblocks, the corresponding GFP 565 pre-amp, Nakamichi cd player. I also have a Yamaha Tuner and Nakamichi RX-202 Tape deck that I hope to dig out of the closet soon and reintroduce. There is also the 80's Technics stuff piled up in the basement...before I could afford the real stuff.

    WELCOME TO CLUB POLK, TIM!

Some nice looking gear above..and LOTS of POWER from those ADCOM monoblocks...

Nakamichi tape decks--great vintage stuff there..I was never able to afford one in my youth so I went with the poor man's equivalent AIWA!

    Have fun!

Welcome to Club Polk. I had the 565 monos running SDA/SRS 1.2TLs and they really made them sing. I can imagine what they are doing to your Monitor 10s. Great vintage gear.

    Thanks for the welcome!

Yeah, the mono-blocks might be a bit of overkill for the Monitors, but as the saying goes...I'd rather have the power and not need it rather than need it and not have it. Along with the ability to add to system with no need to worry about power.

Actually, I tried to power them with one of the new Yamaha RX-V665 7.1 recievers, but it really didn't quite cut it. Sure they sounded good, but it didn't really drive them like I knew they were capable of. The Yamaha went into the closet until some rearranging.

This stuff has been packed away for close to 10 yrs. We moved 2 yrs ago onto 10 acres in the country so I now have the room to do as I please and no neighbors to worry about disturbing.

Welcome to the club!!! I am a tape deck lover myself but I do not use tapes anymore since the late 90s and I grew up in the golden age of audio in the 80s, but could not afford the high end stuff back then. For that comment about Aiwa by CNH - Aiwa like Akai, made some really fancy looking tape decks in the early to mid 80s, even if they wern't high high end!!! But they did have some nice high end features!!! Too bad they dont design equipment like that anymore!!!

So dont knock them Aiwas!!! I bet what you have looks pretty sweet!!!

Interconnect is easy to make, just do a search in this forum. There are several nice tutorials. As for the grills, that may be a bit tougher. There are no grills at all or do they just need fabric?

If they seem like too much work to restore, you can easily sell the drivers and crossovers and make your money back, if not double it.

Try www.partsexpress.com for the cloth material if you plan to build your grilles. Home Depot for wood and hopefully you know someone with carpenter skills & equipment.

I wish I could find some "local" SDA's for sale. Actually, I would be interested in virtually any vintage Polk that I could add to a future "collection". I assume one needs more than 2 sets to consider it a collection.

My bro-inlaw recently offered me his vintage Maggies...1. something series..ones he bought right after college, early 80s. They have bad tweeters, but he said I could have them if I wanted to send them in for rebuild. He is currently running a pair of 3.7s (I think). Have no idea of the cost of a rebuild though. Not sure if it would be worth it...might be able to find a more current working model for less than the rebuild.

My apologizes fir thread Jacking Buckey, I should have started a new thread. That being said, I get to pick up the SDA 2s today, and am very interested to see hoe much work I have to put into them. I plan on refinishing them and possibly replacing drivers and maybe crossovers, etc. Does anyone know if they are veneered or solid wood? Thanks!!!

Illinois is a bit farther than I would travel for anything less than pristine. Those ones in Ohio I had considered, but I too thought the price a bit steep for the condition. I am kinda picky, I like my stuff to be in as close to new condition as I can find. I would rather wait for a pristine or very good set.

Is anybody here old enough to remember that some speaker manufacturers many decades ago used to give a LIFETIME warranty on their loudspeakers.
How could they do that if all this peaking and tweaking is always going on even after 15 or 20 year? I'm just wondering out load...were those warranties just 'nonsense'?

I know a guy who has a cerca late 70s set of KLHs in his used CD and LP shop; a shop he's been running since he bought those. He plays them hours upon hours everyday and they 'still' sound pretty good...he's NEVER touched them. They're completely original.
