It takes all processing out of the AVR and sends the signal from the CD player directly to the amps.
So if you have a CD player that has a better DAC than the AVR it should sound better.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t -
Just be aware that if you run a sub with your AVR and it is connected via the sub/LFE out, switching to source direct (or Pure Direct as some AVRs call it) will shut off the sub/LFE out -for some AVRs - and you'll get nothing out of your sub.
This is because in Source/Pure Direct, your AVR becomes a 2.0 Stereo Amp only - ie no .1 channel output for the sub.
Also ensure that when you go Source/Pure Direct that your AVR will default to set your Main speakers to Large to ensure that you get the full bass frequencies.
Some AVRs will not default Mains=Large in Source/Pure Direct so it may be worth while to save a secondary configuration on your AVR if it supports memory settings and have a configuration with Mains=Large for when you switch to Source/Pure Direct.

Good post Erik!
On my Marantz, on 7.1 input (AUX), it allows me to do the following:
7.1 input with processing (AUX)
7.1 Direct Input (Direct, Video and Display are on)
7.1 Pure Direct (Direct, Shut off all things Video including HDMI and Display)
So for SACD Multi-Channel it allows me to do 5.1 Source Direct too.
Btw, coming from B&K REF50S2, I am totally impressed with Marantz analog quality. It is impressive how it sounds. It passes the source as if there is no pre-amp in between (on Pure Direct) to the power amp. I am really enjoying the source as if I just got it yesterday.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.
