I'm in the midst of building my HT and came across this TV.

I usually buy LCD TVs but I came across a insane deal on this.

How is the picture on DLP TV?

FWIW I am having a service guy come out to repair a Mitsu. DLP tv today that wont fire up the bulb even after the bulb was replaced. The TV is less than 2 years old.

Also for what it's worth, LCD's have their own sets of problems, as well as early break-downs and manuf. defects.

While it's true you usually get what you pay for with tv's, it's not a universal rule. I have an earlier 65" model than that one (in my sig), and the lamp is just now dimming after 2 years of solid use (it's on for probably 12-15 hours a day) and I have had 0 issues with it...ever.

The picture is beautiful, and equal to many lcd's and some plasmas (non-kuro). Mitsubishi is a great brand, and there's nothing wrong with getting a tv that size for $2000+ less than a comparable plasma/lcd.

Mitsubishi DLP's have a 29% repair rate. I'd steer clear. I'll find the numbers and post them when I find them.

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2352856,00.asp

Click the survey results at the top.

On this survey alone 29%...which is really bad.

Overall 7% on other sites, which is still higher than all others by a large margin.

DLP is the worst of the RPTV technologies, yet it is the only one still manufactured. I am still mad at Sony for dropping the SXRD RPTV line. Those TVs kicked plasma, and any other technology, for size/price/picture. Unfortunately, the average consumer, not being very bright, equated thin TVs with better TVs.

The problem with RPTVs is viewing angle and their brightness. Bother are good head on, but because of the way the technology works, they're limited off axis.

I have posted about this alot about DLP/LCD sets. They don't tell you, that when you replace the bulb, your also suppose to replace the starter, the unit that fires up the bulb. That starter unit is about the same price as the bulb so now your talking double. You can risk not replacing the starter, but then if you put in a new bulb and 3 months later the starter goes out,it may take that new bulb with it. Me personally, spent 5 g's for a 60 in Sony LCD and repairs over 5 years. A grand a year isn't worth it to me. Get it fixed and dump that dlp asap.

For the money and you have the room you should be able to find a nicely cared for Mits 73" CRT RP for $6-700 and spend $300 having ISF calibrated and you will laugh at 1080P 240hz.

This is what I have and dread the day it dies because is nothing out there that I prefer except projector and that will not work in my room. I bet if I offered him half the price he would take it.

Yeah the tech came out today because we still had a warranty from circuitcity until 7/2010. He tried to tell me it's the bulb and I told him I replaced that bulb 5 days ago. He's like "Oh, I'll order you a ballast then." I could never get away with passing that crap at my job.

Duh. That is because they stopped making them 3 years ago. However, your best front projectors use SXRD, or the JVC equivilent, LCOS.

Agreed. I have a 57" Hitachi RPTV that I just had 'tuned up' with its second ISF calibration. Perfect color, not the cartoonish bright colors of the thin screens.

I wouldn't touch a DLP right now. The deals you can get on LCD's and even some LED's are ridiculous. I have replaced the bulbs on 4 (2 sony's, a toshiba and a mitsubishi) different televisions for friends and family and ALL of them were under 2 years old. I have a rear projection Panasonic that I haven't had to touch for 5 years and just bought a samsung lcd that relegated the panasonic to the playroom. I couldn't have been happier with either set.

Uh that's because they're still projectors. There isn't really any other predominant technology in projection anymore. LCD is pretty much for data projectors only now.

Toshiba, Hitachi, Sony, Samsung...just to name a few have decided to drop their DLP line a while back.

Mits' DLP is the last straw. Mits pushes the DLP hard by paying salesman a hefty SPIFF ( $100.00 to $200.00 per DLP). Mits has a problem with their light enginee and it will take 3 to 4 weeks to get parts.

I will not touch any DLP any at price point. These dinasaurs with limited sweet spot viewing is at their final production : DEATH.

The biggest question is how much ambient light is in your room? How many viewing positions are at an off axis angle?

DLP's perform horribly and are downright unwatchable in bright rooms, and their off axis performance is horrible.

Your best bet from a price perspective is a Plasma, although they suffer in rooms with a lot of ambient light too.

A friend was over lastnight that has a 55" Sony LCOS 120HZ (The one CNET gave TV of the year too a couple of years ago) and was shocked and in awe with my Mits 73" CRTRPTV. He said my colors were better and he could not take his eyes off of it. THem I put a BRD on. He is looking for one to put in his game room now.

On yeah, he was sitinng off angle by quite a bit.
