Stacking Subs

I have a Psw 505 and a Psw 10. Should I stack them in a corner or spread them out with one in the corner? Or option 3 not use the Psw 10 at all.

Optiion 3 IMHO, that 505 should be enough for your room and will probably just drown that poor 10 out. I guess you could try stacking, but again that 10 will be screaming at the top of it's lungs and all you are going to hear is that 505. Maybe use it for a PC sub? Get a couple of Monitor 40's and use it in the garage, lol. Just my $.02, maybe somebody will have better/more advice soon. Welcome to Club Polk.

Yep, Jeff hit the nail right on the head, I know its enticing to have a dual sub set-up but unless they are of the same model, probably not a good idea. I never was a fan of stacking subs.

Ok thanks for the info. The Psw10 goes back to the deck box outside.
Dont want the Atrium 45's to be lonely anyway. That is what I originally
purchased it for, but I couldnt help but try to use both.

Interesting topic. I have been running dual subs in a musical and HT setup. One sub is a single 12in M&K and the other a dual 12in push-pull firing M&K. Y out from Sub-out on receiver single RCA to each sub. My Yamaha receiver has the YPAO setup mic, and I let it establish a the sub speaker level and make adjustments from that reference point.

I found having the subs separated in the room can cause some cancelling of sound and that side by side or stacked works best for me and I would suggest staying away from corners as things can get a bit 'boomy' rather than accurate.

I think properly tweaked they can easily compliment each other and I have been impressed with the quality of musical sound as well as theater sound. Experimenting with a pair I think can produce a more full level of bass as needed!

I think it is easier to tweak if subs are stacked. Also, I had a 505 and a mirage and they were just too differant types of subs. 505 boomey,more for HT and the mirage more tight.fast for music. I believe no matter where I positioned the subs they would cancel each other out. When I got another mirage and matched it with my other mirage everything came together. I am a big fan of having two subs but only when they are exactly the same. You will always have to experiment with positioning subs.

A multiple sub environment is VERY tricky to get to sound good. It is usually more work than it is worth for most people. Even similar subs in the same room can sound like crap. There are phase issues, and room acoustics to battle.

Even though I have never used it, I have read that the REW software over at hometheatershack.com works really well to help get a flat response out of your sub (and other speakers as well).

If you want to try to get the BEST bass response out of your room, do the sub crawl. This is when you put the sub where you normally sit (the sweet spot) and crawl around the room until you find the place where the best sounding bass is. Another suggestion it to buy or build a sub riser. this elevates the sub off the floor and can also act as an isolator from the floor. Remember, if the sub is directly on the floor, especially, wood floors, it can use the floor for additional unwanted resonation.

Just some thoughts as you figure out your sub placement.

I disagree if you have a big room ,I have my PSW-505 in the front corner of my room and I bought a PSW-10 to put in the back of the room.It does makes a difference ,I call it back bass rear fill.The PSW-10 actually hits the higher bass notes better ,or it tighter and the PSW-505 is good for the gut low bass.IMO

I agree. I sold my psw505 and got a matching Mirage S10 and moved both subs like you from the corners to closer to my towers. Set them up through my Yamaha mic and I like the sound. Not as boomy but I listen to music more. I always thought subs should be in the corners but I believe they cause to much false boominess. I also agree that setting up two subs,even identical, is tricky but I believe worth trying.
I do have qustion? My subs have two downfiring ports. Has anyone experienced problems with downfiring ports on wood floors? Cement slab is under the wood floor.
