+1, BASS is very important but creating a proper sound field comes first, but man ur HT experience will be lacking without a decent sub.

    Sub.

Having rear channels isn't necessary. I'd be more bothered by having a gaping hole in the low frequencies of the soundstage. The LFE track is usually more active than the rear channels.

I would get the sub. It adds a lot to the experience. Plus you could add some super cheap book-shelfs for surrounds. Heck you could grab something at a pawn shop till you can you can upgrade.
    Front - RTiA5's
    Rear - RTiA3's
    Center - CSiA4
    Sub - PSW110

It depends on your fronts. If your L and R can go 25 Hz or lower, I would have rears then sub. Other wise I would get the sub then rear. For me, good solid bass is very important for both music or HT.

Get a nice sub first. It will upgrade your HT experience more than surrounds will. It sounds like you are planning on getting both, but just want to know which one first. For HT a sub is pivotal.

Add one more vote for a sub, 3.1 is fine for the time being until you can get your hands on a set of surrounds. Depending on what you are running for your L/R/C a sub will be your next addition.

Get a good sub. Buy some used book shelf speakers for rears that look good in the room. No real need to spend lots of money on rear speakers IMO.

How are you guys providing advice on what he needs to do without knowing what front speakers he already has? Am I missing something?

It depends on what front speaker you already have. You will probably want a sub ultimately, but if you've already got large speakers up front you may benefit less from a sub. I've got a set of RTi10s set up in a small living room, and they're more than adequate for everything I need - in that scenario you'll get much more from adding surrounds than a sub.

That was why I put that at the end of my post, depending on what he was running for the rest of his system would dictate where he should go from here.
