Speaker compatibility

I run Monitor 10Bs as mains and Monitor 12s in the rear with a CSi5 as the center. In doing the volume checks (no meter), there is a noticeable difference in the white noise sound between fronts and center...and not so much fronts and backs.

Should I be looking for a center that sounds closer to the fronts, or will this not be a big deal if the difference is not too great?

If a change might be in order in the center, what do you recommend for the old Monitors. My fronts are from 1983-84. Seems like it would be really hit and miss unless someone has done the work on this.

Thanks.

The CS250S would be another center to consider. I used to have one and it's no slouch (the tweeter was a close match for the older monitors).

Just a quick note however, and I'm not trying to say you're a noob (or knob for all intents). Have you turned up the center at all when doing the sound checks? I have my center at +1 compared to my fronts.

Sorry Neil, after re-reading your post I know what you were saying about the white noise. Funny how after working and being up for almost 20 hours I can still feel like a dumbass...

They sound very good together. I switched to SDA-CRS's for my center channel.

PM me if you need CS350. I have one that is in great condition.

I and some others have used the Monitor 5.

What kind of money are we talking on the CS350? You can PM me if you prefer.

    Thanks for the info all.

I use CS350 with my SDAs and can ABSOLUTELY NOT discern any timbre difference between the two, providing a seamless front sound stage. They might work just as well with the Monitors. When I looking for a center, 300s and 400s were on the list too as they are sonically similar. The 350 is a big ole beast w/4 speakers, so that might be a consideration if space is somewhat limited.

My CS350 has definatley different timbre than my SDA's. If I didn't have SL2000 tweeters is would be better match.

I found out that Monitor 5's sound much closer and SDA-CRS's are a perfect match.

I do not think think the CS350 that I have has a timber that is different than my
SDAs. They are listened to every day. The center was bought upon recommendation by senior members of this forum that prowl other forums and the recommendation turned out to be great advice. The sound stage is absolutely seamless!

My SDAs are "stock" all around... including the SL2000 tweeters... no mods. I can vouch as I am their only owner.

It's timbre is very close, but I found CRS's to match perfect. The CS350 is very close to the same sound but the tweeter hass slightly different sound to it.

I was happy with the CS350 and would use it in my HT set-up if I decided to use more then 2 channels my SDA-2B's.

It's a very close match and the best match I have heard for a production center channel speaker.

YES!!!! another CS250 user - You are the first person I have seen mention this speaker which is a decent little center - I am looking forward to trying out a CSiA6 though when I get a little extra cash..........
