I have the monitor 70 setup and I'm looking for a good receiver. I've noticed a lot of people love the onkyo's in the $500 rang, but the pioneer VSX-1019AH-K is getting good reviews on most websites. Can anyone tell me with direction to go?

For Onkyo, I would go from 707 and up. You really need to look at the new Pio 9040 . I do not need another AVR but if I do I would happily cough up $499.00 for Wolfson Dacs, ABT video scaler, Pqls, detachable power cord and made in Malaysia ( beggar cannot be too choosy) . These features only can be found on the Elite line which costs a whole lot more than $499.00 NIB.

    +1,

And both of those receivers also have the all important Pre-outs!!

Either is a great choice....better than the 1019 and a bit more powerful!

I like Onkyo myself, and the 707's and up are always good options. The pioneer's are nice as well, but haven't "heard" one of those. Either way you go as cnh mentioned, make sure you get one with pre-outs, it will help "future proof" your system for when the upgrade bug bites, lol. Welcome to Club Polk.

i went through the same process a little over a year ago and had then current onkyo and pio of a comparable price in my sights. ultimately went with... denon 2808ci. liked the sound and features on all of them. onkyo ran a little warmer and the denon had a much bigger power supply. one of the reasons this was comparatively priced was the fact that it was closeout. just another brand to consider

How much power do I need to push the Monitor 70's the right way, and if I go with one of the nicer onkyo's or the elite pioneer's do I need a second amp? Here is my setup onkyo SR504, CS1, monitor 70's, boston CS-23 surrounds, Velodyne VRP-12. Sorry I'm new at this.

The more power the better, I m some what new as well and i have monitor 60 set up. I m just now replacing my AVR with one with pre-outs. Like others have said make sure it has pre-outs because even the best AVRs are rather wimpy when compared to a stand alone power AMP.

The monitor speakers are easy to drive but like any speaker they beneifit from not just more watts but clean watts and a real power amp has a lot more of both.

The AVR will drive them fine but if you want to save some money stay away from club Polk and more importantly don't ever listen to a high end system.
However if you make the mistake of listening to a true hi-fi system you will catch the upgrade bug and catch it fast. Pre-outs will help with that.

+1 on what Manskito said. One thing to add though, before you look into external amps I would suggest a few changes to your setup. The CS1 must have a hard time keeping up with those 70's, if you can fit it, I would suggest upgrading to the CS2. Something like 50-75% of all audio in HT is formatted to play through your center and you don't want to skimp here. Also, while it isn't as important as the front 3, timbre matching is a very important part of the overall sound of your system. You may want to look into the Monitor 30/40's for your surrounds. The surrounds are more of a suggestion, but the center is a more crucial upgrade, IMHO. Your AVR is also pretty important, and if you want to add an external amp later you will have to upgrade to atleast the TX-SR705 or higher for the Onkyo's. If you are happy with the overall sound of your setup, then taht is all that matters. Just my $.02. Welcome to Club Polk.
