i have a 15 inch dvc sub and want to build my own box so as to match my other furnishings. my question is whether or not too much air space is possible in a ported box? do i need to build the sub enclosure then build it into the furniture piece or can i build the sealed piece and have extra airspace. what will the extra space do? i know too little wont let the sub breath but too much is confusing for me. thanks folks ,dan

I can tell you from first hand experience, its not a good idea to put a sub ported or not into an enclosure, it will sound terrible...trust me.

my thought was to port out of the furniture piece. i think ive gotten the ports integrated into my look in the sound room. kind of a sound cannon if you will. i didnt mean to put the sub box into another box but to build an enclosure into the inner structure of the larger piece? am i making any sence at all? also what happens when you port out two adjacent sides of a box in a 90 degree offset say 4 out front and 2 on either end?

I guess if you have the woodworking skills and use some good MDF it may be ok, that sounds like a whole lotta work to me. If you were to do that and it didnt sound good you would be pretty much stuck. Its always nice to be able to move the sub around the listening area.

that was my thought on the multiple ports.... you could redirect the sound pressure to achieve the "movement" aroun the room...i think haha

i dont think its going to be that bad... the piece is designed to take place of a sub in that spot so i dont think movement will be an issue. i also wonder if the angle of the sub within the enclosure will play. at 45.00 a sheet for mdf(or so iguess) i dont want to do it more than a couple dozen times haha. my other thought would be ports of different lengths. or actually paired ports of different lengths so as to get as much versatility as possible.

Maybe you could find a bluprint online for something like that unless of course you already have one. :)

i once had a panasonic bookshelf system from japan. (bought in japan) that had 4 signal wires to each spaeker obviously crossed in the unit not the speaker itsself. the woofer was triple chambered! id like to replicate that chamber series for a 15 inch sub but dont know how to calculate the sizes of the chambers. does any one know?

Here's what the we need to know to properly help you as best we can:
    1. Model number of the sub
    2. Some sort of sketch(you can use paint on your computer)
    3. The desired dimensions of the "enclosure"
    4. The layout of the room if possible
    5. What will you be pushing it with(what kind of amp/watts)?
    6. What will be the use(HT,Music, etc.)?

That being said, I agree with Knucklehead, it will be a lot of work for nothing if it sucks. Projects are always fun, and you will learn from it as well though:) Many of the guys on here have enclosure design software, so they can give you a good approximation on what will work. I haven't installed it on my new computer, but I can give that a shot if no one else chimes in. We gotta know what the sub is though, before we can tell you port size/length, and chamber dimensions that will work.

it can be no higher than 25 3/4 high outside dim and no more 24 deep. width is unlimited i intend to use it for listening while mowing the field. as it is i have to open a window to hear behind the barn over the 870 johndeere. id like to put some garden speakers in and not have to install an outdoor sub for the deck.
