Hi all...

Here are some pics with my 1C's...cosmetically, not good shape...they sound fantastic though :) Setup is in my signature. Any way to touch up the cabinets? I will post later, when I have more time, their position in the room so people can hopefully comment on the setup. Rug is being installed on Saturday, so I'll have a nicer setup then.

As you can see...the fronts look very nice...the tops and sides, and even the back are scratched, or worse. The bottom, the cork underneath is in bad shape also. Will probably put them on some granite...perhaps hack off the bottom cork? Woudl love to hear comments ... and no upgrades as of now ... I like how they sound!

Isn't there a law in New Jersey to prevent that kind of abuse to a fine set of speakers? If not there should be. Well thank God they sound good still. Congrats.

I bought them from someone in PA...I guess there are no laws there :) How do I refinish speakers? I don't believe these are real wood...they are 1C studio versions.

Yes those are studios. Touch up with a sharpie or some black touch up paint if it bothers you.

If you know someone with a Harley that uses a product call Pig Spit, give them a good wipe down and you will be shocked at how much blacker and deeper the black will look.

What do you mean by Cork ? I had 1C studios and no of no cork on them.

You'll be bowled over after you do the crossovers, upgrade the tweeter, and Dynamat the midwoofers and passive radiators. You think they sound good now . . . you ain't heard notin' yet!

I was going so suggest a sharpie touch up job too. Pig Spit is good stuff.

    Nice score Pycroft.

Conradicles had in his 'system showcase' 1C's, and he said they got a custom paint-job by someone. They don't even look like the same cabinets. I think they look fantastic. Anyone know how to do that. To be honest, it's not super important, because they're in the basement, where my 'man' area is, not in a living room or something, but it would still be nice to have them look respectable.

Cork isn't the right word. This is a copy/paste job from another user in a thread on 1C's: "Quote:
My idea for the base of the 1C Studio was to remove off the square base and replace it with two pieces of flat 3/4" MDF that are sandwiched together (glued and screwed). Round the corners and bottom edges a bit, then Primer and spray pain them black, then screw to the bottom of the cabinet and mount the spikes into the new base".

It's a rather thin base that goes around the bottom of the speaker, but is thin. I will take a picture of it. Another user removed his and put it on granite (Want to try this, perhaps without removing the actual base).

Thanks for the comments, keep em coming :)

The cabinets are the same the outside shell anyway. 1 has the risers like yours the other has the caps top and bottom with the grill cloth on the sides. the main cabinet for the drivers and tweeters are the same though.

Here would be my suggestions to you based on the other SDA's I have seen refinished by other polkies on this site:
    You could...
Just apply new black vinyl veneer to the tops and sides. It is easier than you think and not too expensive.

Nikolas812 painted my top and bottom caps, but it was not cheap. He does a fantastic job.

    Enjoy and keep us updated.

1st try the Pig Spit, you may be suprised.

I bought some Klipsch KG2's a couple months ago that were black and scratched up a little. With something similar to the Pig Spit, they looked very nice. I was shocked!

Nice info, one question to all- What are the final spec ratings for SDA-1C's? I have literature that says they are 10-750W per channel and others that list them as 50-500W. I understand they fall into the 6 ohm rating and the studio and wood versions are the same speaker inside. Just really curious

okay, so what exactly is "Pig Spit" and were do you buy it? Stain, paint? Both? Other? Sounds like a great 'restoration aide' for black speakers. Any long term detrimental effects?

Just found it....didn't actually think it would be called"PigSpit" but yep it is....lol
(you know like q-tip or band aid, is a generic term now)

do you recommend 'Fast detail' or 'Original'?

Perhaps this will give you some details. Really doesn't matter unless you're running a 5 wpc flea amp.

This weekend I'll be hooking my 1C's up to my 15wpc 6V6 based tube integrated. I have no doubt it won't be an issue. I'm sure it won't win an SPL contests but who cares.
