Front speaker/ presence speakers placement

I got a yamaha v-rx663 and am intrested in using the presance speakers feature. Currently I have a 61" JVC (about 48" give/take wide) and the monitors 70's are two feet out from the tv facing center chair. I am debating on getting another set of Monitor 30's for some presance speakers. Here are my questions:

1. Should I move my fronts in closer to my TV?
2. If I get presance speakers do you think it would sound ok if they were mounted about 1 inch from the ceiling?
3. Are presence speakers ever worth the time/ effort?

Thanks

u will not know how the presence will sound unless u give them a try. i have the RX-V665 and i didn't give it a try.

as for bringing the fronts closer to the TV u need to consider that ur main seating position should form a equilateral traingle with your front speakers, also narrowing your front sound stage is not advisable.

As of now my Center speakers and R/L fronts are 9 ft away from center seat. I guess I'll hook up two of my old speakers and give it a whirl, thats the olny way I'll know.

I think the jury is still out on the presence speakers, althouigh I know of one guy here who is running a 9.1 or 9.2 and he loves his presence speakers (Knucklehead I think is his name) This is going to be a silly question, but I have to ask. Your AVR has the ability to run presence speakers right? I know there are a few Onkyo's that have the ability along with a handful of others, but the technology is still fairly new. Give it a shot and see how you like it, the 30's can be had for pennies these days (not literally, but you get my point) and if don't like it you can use them for something else. I am going to put a link to Dolby's website for setting up a 7.1 "properly" but they have yet to add a schematic for 9.1. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

LOL, my bad Dave. I thought it was you, now I have to go find out who it actually was, lol.

Edit: I found him!! It was kuntasensei who said this in another thread "Anyone who's happy with 5.1, more power to 'em. That's really what it's all about - whether you're happy with your system. Besides, don't look at me for your "less speakers" paradigm... I'm rockin' 9.1 with height channels right now."

Maybe shoot him a PM and see what he has to say about where he has his located.
