Show her a copy of Mad Max before you run those by her...and tell her they're vintage postapocalyptic gear...collectibles!! Would go nice with an industrial (steel) coffee table and audio rack?

LOL they probably sound like ****!! Just a guess. That kick **** speaker maker couldn't even have them match? Looks like a high school project. Pretty high WAF though  OK they are JBL with 103db efficiency so the ad claims. I'd stay VERY far away :p

At that price, no way. For $100, I'd get them just to listen. I bet they don't sound that bad.

Man, I think those speakers are butt ugly. Like, you could literally remove my butt, and make a nicer looking speaker.

    Cool boxy shape though.

They look like Altec VOT (Voice of the Theatre) cabinets but if they're loaded with JBL drivers they might be a little... harsh-sounding.

Don't laugh... I know someone who is working on an HT setup using four Altec VOT A5s (equipped with 1505 multicell horns and 288 compression drivers) and an A8 center channel.

If you're not familiar with the VOT family, see www.lansingheritage.com

I've seen those pop up here from time to time. I think i would be losing vital parts of my body real quick if i brought those home.

The guy that bought my old GFA-5200 had a 5.2 setup consisting of FIVE Klipsch Cornwalls in modified cabinets and two 15" Dayton Titanics in custom enclosures. It was absolutely ridiculous.

    But awesome.

I thought that Altec/Lansing was inseperable from JBL (James B. Lansing)?

Walter Carlos of Switched on Bach fame had four Cornwalls in the near the ceiling in his studio "back in the day" (1977, in the case of the photo below).

Walter Carlos is now Wendy Carlos... but that's another story.

As a sort-of aside (and sort-of not an aside) - My living room speakers were a pair of 1974 Cornwalls for about a decade. They were replaced with a set of Altec 846A Valencias -- essentially the A-7 VOT in a smaller bass-reflex cabinet. No contest, to my ears, as to which I prefer day-in day-out (in terms of Klipsch Heritage vs. vintage Altec). They do need a subwoofer, though (the Cornies do pretty well on their own).

He has 2 pairs of these. I am thinking he may have took a pic of the 2 cabinets that dont match maybe? Either way I was kinda joking about the wife thingy. I imagine these are pretty huge speakers. But I do still like the looks! :p

And if these were VOT's....woud anyone opinion be different? :D

If you're going to set up a front projection with sound transparent screen, these would probably work very well. "Small home theater" i would say no. For a home these would be in a "large home theater"....2000sq ft or so.

103db? That's normal for horn loaded speakers. My Forte II's are 99 or 100db..
    Main Surround -
    Epson 8350 Projector/ Elite Screens 120" / Pioneer Elite SC-35 / Sunfire Signature / Focal Chorus 716s / Focal Chorus CC / Polk MC80 / Polk PSW150 sub

    Bedroom - Sharp Aquos 70" 650 / Pioneer SC-1222k / Polk RT-55 / Polk CS-250

    Den - Rotel RSP-1068 / Threshold CAS-2 / Boston VR-M60 / BDP-05FD

Only in the sense that Jim Lansing's name is associated with both. His own story is short and pretty tragic; see www.lansingheritage.org. They were pretty vicious competitors for the sound reinforcement and pro monitor business for a long time. I think Altec pretty much owned the movie theatre business from the 1940s into the 1980s,though. The VOT was simply what you heard when you went to the movies well into the 1970s. THe (in)famous peaked midrange of the Altec horns and drivers was very deliberate -- they were installed behind the screen and had to project through it!

JBL is now part of Harman International and still makes some good pro and home stuff (although I am not a big fan myself). The Altec name is owned by someone (dunno who anymore) and gets applied to generally pretty junky stuff.

The vintage Altec legacy still lives, though (fortunately for us fans) at Great Plains Audio: http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/

Here are some proper Voice of the Theatres, from www.lansingheritage.org :-)

When I picked up my Tannoy HPD-385A's, the owner also had a few pairs of larger JBL and Altec horns. He demoed one pair for me that had 2 15" woofers and a large horn on top. They didn't sound too bad and hardly needed any volume to shake the house.
