Used amp prices

Team,

A gentleman is selling a couple of amps locally:

Adcom GFA 555II and A Rotel RB951 (I think not the MkII, unfortunately).

For some reason, I am more interested in the Rotel. Is it any good? Better than the amp section of the HK 3485 stereo (120/150W x2 into 8/4Ohms respectively), for example?

What would be a good used price for the Rotel? The seller is asking way too much, IMHO, so I won't even list that.

Thanks,
Val

edit: maybe I should have posted in the 2 channel area?

I can answer half of that:

Yes, it will be better than the amp section of your HK. I don't know what the pricing is on that amp, though, i've never really looked into Rotel stuff for whatever reason, sorry. :(
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

    The RB951 is 50WPC, and I wouldn't pay over $100ish.
The 555II is 200WPC, and I wouldn't pay over $300ish in excellent condition.

It all depends on what you want to drive.

Arg. I fat fingered the Rotel model. That'd be a toss up for me if it would really be better than what's in the HK.

    Thank you very much, Folks.

    You've confirmed my thoughts exactly!

Yes, that's a "baby 50W Rotel", but I thought I could pick it up as a secondary backup amp, and was not planning to offer more than, say $120. That's less than half of the asking price, and I didn't want to offend the seller in case there was something VERY SPECIAL about that model that I obviously didn't know. The asking $$ on the Adcom is much more reasonable, thus my confusion.

If you can swing it, the pair of gfa 565's that seller has for $550 look VERY interesting.

I know what you mean, Russ. "The last amps I will ever need" :D Very tempting, agreed.

    $300 for a 555? No freaking way.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I wouldn't pay it....the 565 monoblocks sound more attractive to me although the price has me wondering about condition.

I think after talking with the gentleman, he just doesn't know the true value... Sad, because I was ready with cash in hand. I didn't want the monos, but maybe one of the other two.

Where exactly do you shop for GFA-555's? I'll go pick myself up a few. They regularly sell for $300ish on audiogon, here, and ebay.

It's a secret. I buy used all the time and he mentioned cash in hand....you'd be suprised what that can do.
