Hookup questions for dual subs

I have:
Polk RM-705 HT system (including it's sub)
Polk PSW-111
Onkyo TX-SR304
Obviously, I'm not looking at winning any awards with my setup, but it suits me and my small living room well. I know this setup is for HT, but it pulls double duty as occasional radio/CD music.
Currently I have a Y adapter on the back of my amp with a decent RCA cable connected to the subs. One side is going to the R port on the RM-705 sub, and the other is going to the L port on the PSW-111.
My questions:
1. Is this the best way to connect the subs? The PSW-111 has an LFE jack whereas the RM-705 sub does not. Should I put Y adapters and run each line into both the L and R jacks on each sub? Should I use the LFE port on the PSW-111, even though the RM-705 doesn't have one?
2. Where should I be looking to set my crossovers on the amps and/or the receiver? Polk recommends 120Hz, I think, but that seems to get too much high frequency bass into my music. Sounds okay in the movie soundtracks.
3. The room is carpeted, thus the down-firing RM-705 is pushing the bass straight into it. Is this going to muffle/alter the bass appreciably? Would it help to put the sub on a piece of MDF or something similar? What about turning it on it's side?

Welcome to club Polk!
If you're running satellites, which you are...you really should follow what Polk recommends or you will have a hole in your bass...missed frequencies.
Small sats can't handle anything below 120hz.

Thanks for the info. That's kind of what I was thinking. Just wanted some reinforcement.
Does anyone have any thoughts on my other questions? With the PSW-111, should I even bother using the sub that came with my RM-705 system? It sounds much boomier than the PSW-111, but I'm wondering if that's because it on carpet, or just a lower quality unit? Thoughts?
