Dumb CD Question

Y'all please forgive my ignorance, but I was burning a CD last night and got to thinking (yes, I know that's dangerous) about how the CD burner works. If I'm correct, the lazer burns a pit in the disc surface, burn spot = 1 and unburned spot = 0 to create the binary digital code sequence. What I got to wondering about is how the heck a CD-RW works? If the surface is burned by the lazer, how the heck does it get erased? Any help in removing this befuddling mystery from my poor feeble brain would be greatly appreciated.
