Well it finally happened, had to cancel my CC account yesterday. Their issuing me a new card and number, sure is a bummmer, have had that card and number for a long time....

And yes, I'm very careful, especially with security on my computer. Who knows how they got a hold of it....

Kinda funny though, the transaction was for $142 at perfumeland of Orlando

There are a bunch of different ways they can get it. About a year or so ago there was some data base compromises with the major CC companies like Visa and Mastercard. The people where able to get the #'s and what not. A lot of companies were informed and had to make the choice of either reissuing cards for everyone that was affected (ie a lot of money for them to do) or leave the cards sit out there and if fraud would happen try to block it and then reissue the card.
They can also get your info from just using it at a merchant, waiter writes it down, ect.

I'm not saying that this is what happened specificlly to you but they do happen a lot. It sucks, I had the same thing happen last year with a debit card, and hell I even work for a bank lol.

Not all banks that had cards affected did it, which to be honest I thought was dumb on those banks part because of the amount of fraud that they saw, but some companies want to save money more than be there for the customer...oh well...

I had a simillar experiance. somehow someone get a hold of my debit card # and western unioned 160.00 from my checking to somewhere in Orlando. Why they didn't drain my whole account I don't know but lucky they didn't. I fought it out with the bank and a few weeks later it was refunded

    Just a followup:

Got my new CC yesterday and all is well again. Was just the one charge to the perfumeland place...

Kinda funny too, got a call from UPS a few days ago, they had a package for me from Pland of Orlando, wondered if I had moved....It had my name and phone number on the package but a different address....ha:)

I do have a subscription to the 3-1 monitoring with Equifax so I submitted a fraud alert notice with them. There also a couple other options, you can put a lock on your credit info so if anybody requests a credit check I have to be contacted otherwise it won't go through. The other option is called webdetect, you submit your CC numbers and SS number and if it shows up on these "underground" sites you also get notified...

So, guess I"ve done all I can do for now.

I would forward that info to your CC account holder so they can use that in thier investigation--don't assume they already know about it.

Now that sounds scary right there. That is definately not something I would do. Might as well give them your Birthdate and Mother's maiden name while you're at it.

I have several business cards plus personal cards and use one or another of them online almost daily, but all in all have had few problems.

I've had it happen twice in 7 years where unauthorized charges showed up on my statement and I had to fill out, sign and file an affidavit with the company (CitiBank). That account did not work until the new card arrived.

In 2005 my wife was pick-pocketed before the holidays and they ran up about 6K in the 30 minutes it took to get the card reported as stolen.

More recently, with USAA, Sam's Club Discover (GE Capital) and Delta American Express, they've sent notices that a new card was on the way due to some type of compromise, but current cards continued to work until the new cards arrived. I think in these cases they were protecting against the possibility that they might have had internal issues leading them to believe card numbers had been stolen.

Combining both personal business accounts, I charge low to mid six-figure amounts every year and have never been on the hook for even a penny.

I'm surprised their fraud early warning process didn't kick in sooner. After all they still have to issue the approval #s. Unless of course you normall have that kind of activity on those cards.

One day my Debit card stopped working. I called the bank and was told that I will be getting a new card because of suspected card compromise. Apparently they learned of a Card # theft ring and my card was determined to have been used at the location where the theft ring was operating. There was no indication that my card or # had been compromised, but they were playing it safe and I am OK with that. I only wish they told me ahead of time before they just cut it off.
Anyway I had to get a totally new card and use a new PIN. I asked about why I had to get a new PIN and the CS rep told me that apparently the card swipers the ring was using apparently also had the ability to pull PIN #s from the card. I didn't know that was possible, but interesting to say the least.

Anyway, since I very rarely used that card, and I knew the time frame of the suspected compromise, I was able to determine that it must have occurred at a local Mickey D's.

We were amazed too. To start, we think they had a grocery cart full of meat already in line when the wallet was lifted at the supermarket. That charge hit within a minute or two of when my helpful wife was distracted by a guy in the meat department who asked her how to bake a ham (her purse was behind her in the cart). When she turned around she noticed here purse had been rifled through. Store personal had a video of a woman checking out the $700+ purchase that hit our card there.

We have Target, HH Gregg and Best Buy all in a row basically sharing the same parking lot, and they hit those places in rapid succession with large purchases. The purchases were about 10 minutes apart which indicated to the detectives that someone probably already had the items picked out while someone else shuttled the card from store to store. They also hit her at just after 10 AM and it was about a week before Thanksgiving so store volume was not that great at that time. And yes, unfortunately, the pattern was not much different from ours at the time. Citibank's fraud department did not turn it off. Our call-in was the key.

For 5 years now my wife has walked up uninvited to women with purses left in their carts and educated (I call it "lectured") them. :)

Yes, the account was canceled right away

Yes, called them about that too.

By them do you mean Equifax? I'm not putting it out there on a public website. Its integrated into Equifaxes fraud monitoring site...The numbers aren't visible anywhere, they watch these sites to see if the numbers pop up there.. I'm not scared about this at all, feel secure now more then ever. Anybody would play hell trying to fraud me right now....
