Connecting turntable to computer

I want to transfer some old 33's my folks have to CDs...I know quality will be pretty bad, but I want to be a good son.

Can I connect the turntable straight to the input on the computer with appropriate connections, or

do I need to run the turntable into an amp and then to the computer?

Suggestions on good recording software to record entire LPs?

Hi Mike. You will definitely need at least a pre-amp to boost the TT output to line level. I use Amadeus Pro ($40, Mac only) http://www.hairersoft.com/AmadeusPro/AmadeusPro.html

Audacity is free and cross platform. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

    +1 to Audacity for software
If you have one of the newer USB turntables then you are ready to go. There are a few tt's with rca outs that have built in pre-amp but those are pretty rare. I use a Carver CT-Seven for the pre out. I also use an rca to din adapter to jack it into my soundcard. So far the results have been excellent. I gave my dad a vinyl to cd rip of the Eagles Long Road Out of Eden for Christmas that sounds better than the store cd. Have fun!
