Surround Rears

I've treated my self to a new sound system and this is what I got so far:

Center: CS2
Fronts: Monitor 70's
Rears: Monitor 40's
Surround Rears: old Harman Kardon HKTS 8
Sub: PSW505, and old Harman Kardon TS-8 sub
RX- Yamaha rx-v663

At the time I didnt think about the surround rears, but now that I've got the others hooked up they just sound so good :D, and now I want to have a good set of surround rears to match the rest of the system.

What I'm debating on is to get another set of Monitor 40's for the surround rears OR move the current 40's the the S-Rear and buy some 50's or 60's to go with the rest of the system. What do you think would be the best option for me at this point.

My room is is about 16' x 12' my tv is centered on the long wall and I sit about 8' away from it, the center speaker was to big to fit below so I make a self to mount on so its about 5' off the ground and on the wall with an 1" of space between it and the wall, this makes it 9' away from center chair. The fronts are 2' away from the L/R side of the tv and 9' away from center chair. as of now the rears are on table/ shelf things and sit about 36" off the ground and are laying flat and about 1" from the wall facing the front wall(need to mess with these still) and 9' from center chair. I hope that draws a decent picture for now. I will get better mesurments and make a drawing when I get home. My sofa is on the wall and dont want to pull it out any as my room is small.

With all that being said what do you think the best speakers would be for my surround rears.

Thanks

Hey lamb and welcome to Club Polk. IMHO, your room is better suited with a well setup 5.1 over trying to cramp in 2 more speakers. If you absolutely have to have 7.1, I would get another pair of Monitor 40's and call it good. Not much sound is going to go to those extra 2 speakers as it is, and IMHO the 60's would be overkill. Hope this helps and lets see what the real experts have to say. Great looking rig you have btw, I have one very similar. :D

+ 1, 5.1 is more than enough for your room, but if the upgrade bug is too much for you to handle, go with the 40's or even 30's for rear surrounds. Rear towers would be overkill in your setup IMO. Thats a nice HT rig and BTW, welcome to the club.

I agree with the all of you that 5.1... I mean 5.2 have to use the two subs... just because I can :D is more than enough for the room, but as domflane said the upgrade bug is going to drive me nuts, that and I only plan on living here for a few more months until my time in service is up, assuming I can get a job back home that is. The only reason I want towers is because the 40's don't mount to the walls. I looked at the 50's and 40's and to me the 50's seem to be the same thing as the 50's with the exception of the 50's are towers, am I right?

I saw that... SO tempted but that means I have to make some shelfs for them... and I'm lazy, ah hell I might just do it for the challenge of making something.

Did some looking around, the 30's look like a great choice as they are wall mounts. Might have to get these. I dont think surround rears work all too hard anyways.

*UPDATE* went with the 30's I think I'll be happy with them.

Good choice with the 30's, they'll be more than enough speaker for RS use. Enjoy them.

You are correct that the 40's aren't "designed" to be wall mounted, but with a little tinkering they can be. There is a guy here on the forum that was trying the BT77's and there is another one I just saw tonight with the AM40 that looks very similar to the BT77. The 30's are a good choice though, esp. since they are designed to be wall mounted. Links for the wall mounts below.

Go with the Polk 40's. Just my opinion. 30's would be nice as well if you get a good price on them
