SDA-CRS+ and my first post!

Good afternoon!

Well, I've been lurking CP for several years, and have decided that it is high time to post! I know, I know...

Anyway, I thought I'd quickly share how I came to enjoy Polk speakers, particularly the SDA-CRS+ set that I have!

It was completely accidental. Back in 2000 or so I would have sworn that a Bose surround setup was the perfect system for everything (of course, I'd only heard them in a store... but that didn't matter!). My wife and I were living on base at Hanscom AFB, MA and had started to piece together a sound system. Of course, we had little to no money, so a lot of it was pretty questionable. ;)

Well, Hanscom had the pattern of running a "bulk pickup" every Monday morning. So... fire up the '83 Wagoneer late Sunday nights for the "Sunday Night Scrounge!" It was fun to see what everyone was tossing to the curb (especially the officers!)! I got bowling balls and golf clubs and lawn mowers and who knows what! And... I got a pair of Polk SDA-CRS+ speakers in their cardboard boxes complete with some weird cable that seemed to connect the two! ;)

I had no idea... I took them home and plugged them in and was saddened to find out why they had been tossed. One had definitely taken a tumble, and the big air core inductor had snapped in half, taking some crossover components with it... ugh!

Well, I went to google and found this place... what a find! I got in touch with Ken at Polk customer service and with his help, ordered a new board and got two 8mH air core inductors from partsexpress to replace the giant one that had "un-slinkyed" itself. And... poof! Here I am, 7 years later and still enjoying my "scrounge" find!

Anyway, I could type on and on about the process of then to now, but that's enough for today! This post is really meant to be a thank-you to everyone that has helped me out, even though you didn't know you were doing it!

Thanks!

John

See, this is exactly why this forum is so great... 4 "welcomes" in an hour! You all rock!
I've never felt really qualified to post anything, but I guess after this long, I should at least be able to ask questions that make sense! Thanks again!

George Grand, I'm really curious about that great night you had at Hanscom. There are people that live right beside it that don't even know it's there... It's decidedly rare to find someone just out-and-about that knows about it, much less has been there!

    Yours,

    John

    I've been everywhere. Twice.

It was in the 90's. We were supposed to come straight home to Jersey from Stuttgart. We were out pre-flighting the airplane when the command post called us back in for a mission change. We had to wait a few hours for them to fly in some guy from somewhere else in Europe, that had to be medivacced home. Strecher and everything, strapped him into one of the bunks like cargo. Don't harass the nurses (Okay!) The closest place to home for this guy was Hanscom I guess. We landed at Hanscom at some god awful hour of the night. The medical people were right out to take the passenger wherever he was going. We (the crew) sat on that damn ramp for about two hours waiting for transport to billeting to show up. It never did. We finally flagged down a fire truck or something and they got us some transport. Another two hours goes by before we sit down at a Denny's for some kind of meal, and then to Holiday Inn or some dump. The whole while I should've been home in my own bed.

When that base closed down for the night, they were really closed.

That's three welcomes and a narrative, I believe.

LOL, yeah, I've been "absorbing..." Or more like, "leeching." Anyway, I'll try and make up for lost time, hearingimpared!

George Grand, you are right, that whole area rolls in the sidewalks for the night. Boston is less than 30 mins away and you couldn't tell. It was nice in that regard. I can't believe you got stuck out there that long, especially considering how small the base is. They really must have forgotten about you... ugh. The firestation and security forces are in easy sight of the flightline (which isn't even owned by the base anymore). For that matter, so is the band hall (where I was at).

I've definitely eaten at that Denny's... it's not good. :)
