hallow sounding center?

may sound strange but I was playing around with some things the other day. I hooked up my old CS2 for a center channel with my RTIA9's and watched a movie. Now I was just doing this to see what affect it would have I normally use the A6 for my center. Anyways....well I have my AVR set for small center and 5.1 surround with main vocals coming through the center.
but for some weird reason all the vocals sounded hallow to me, and were overpowered by the sound affects by the A9's..
So I went and boosted the center on my AVR moved it to large ect...still the same damn thing.
Now it seems odd to me this would happen seeing the CS2 isn't that much different in specs from the A6 but gave a completely different sound.
I just never noticed the hollowness of the voices, they lacked authority when I watched movies...
any ideas why this would happen besides its because I'm using a different model from the RTI line?

Check to be sure the jumper between the terminals has not come off (assuming the speaker has a jumper). I had this issue when I got my CSi40 - replaced the jumper and I was good to go.

    Good luck!

The CS2 acutally doesn't have a jumper at all, when I had originally bought it I thought it did have 5 way binding post but it doesn't.

I mean its just weird both have 6.5 woofers, the dome tweeter, about the same power handling 175 CS2 vs 200 A6, 90 for sensativity.
It just was strange that it would sound so hallow...like in just speaking passages I would have to crank up the volume just to hear it, but when playing the sound effects at that level would have to turn it way down...to me it seems like an AVR issue, but I redid everything and couldn't find anything.

The CS2 isn't timbre-matched with your RTiA9s, the perfect match is the CSiA6, that's why it sounds "hallow". Why aren't you using the A6 anyway? When you set the crossover to small or large, it won't make a difference cuz it only filters out 100Hz-80Hz (and down) which is well below midrange.

I was just playing around with it, I had it sitting in my Bedroom which I was going to set up my smaller HT and wanted to see how it would sound with the A9's I realize its probably not the perfectly matched speaker but still to me should at least sound somewhat the same as what the A6 did.
I'm using monitor 70s in the bedroom so it'll be just fine in there but oh well.

hallow: to make holy, as in hallowed ground.

It's a real word so your spell checker would not have flagged it.

did you have your receiver auto calibrate all your speakers? maybe they aren't calibrated.. and the front mains are to loud for that center.

+1, different tweeters in these two, and may be part of the problem.

What position is you CS2 in....? Is it near a wall or very far from one...? Are there a lot of reflecting surfaces in your room? Placement may be part of your problem? And what is it sitting ON??? Put it on something solid and firm.

Its sitting in the same spot my A6 sits which is about 2-3 feet away from the back wall sitting on top of a TV stand that is constructed of metal and glass and sits on a glass shelf. I have to "flip" the speaker so that it faces up to get a more direct listening position to the listener as otherwise the shelf it too low to have it flat and straight on if that makes any sense.

And acutally I thought they both used the same cloth dome tweeter, by looks the appear the same but I can be wrong. and acutally its more of the just pure vocals such as when someone is talking that creates the hollow sound not the tweeter as its coming from the 6.5 woofers.

It just struck me as strange that they would sound soo different.

and yes I did recalibrate, and then redid it, and then did a manual set up and even boosted the center by a couple places and lowered the L/R a few and regardless of what I do it still just sounds shallow to me, no real depth, which is strange as I used to use it with the Monitor 70's in the same set up and it didn't sound like this at all.

I know those tweeters look the same but they are not. Will have to look at the specs on those speakers again..! In the M70 set up are the speakers 'closer to the wall' by any chance?

it is the same way how the Monitor series (Monitor 70) and the RTi series (CSiA7) sound different. They might have the same looking tweeter/driver, but they have different crossovers, internals, etc. If they sounded the same, then they would have to be priced the same... :-)
