Momo Sub for home use?

I recently acquired two Momo MM2124DVC subs. They are new and I was able to get them for 40.00 each.

I know these are car audio speakers, but I am possibly interested in making a home subwoofer using one of these.

Can anybody advise how feasible this is or if they have done it? I don't know where to start if it can be done.

Should I/can I buy a box that is already made, or is it better to build from scratch? ( I have access to well equipped wood shop ).

Thanks in advance for any input.

Cheers!

David.

I guess I'll chime in since no one else seems to want to. I was hoping someone more knowledgeable than myself would, but oh well:D You CAN use one for home, but how good it would work will depend on what you want to use it for/enclosure type/budget etc. Being that it has dual 4ohm voicecoils represents your first problem. You will either have to find a home sub plate amp that can handle a 2ohm load(wire the voice coils in parallel) or one that puts out decent power at 8ohms(wire the voice coils in series). Most plate amps that you could buy are made to work best at 4ohms. Or... you can use both subs and wire the each sub for 8ohms and then wire the two together in parallel to get a single 4ohm load. You can go to somewhere like Parts Express to purchase a plate amp. If I haven't scared you away from this project yet, then I/we need to know what you intend to use it for(music or HT). Also need to know the room size it will be in, and what other speakers/receivers/amps will be used with it. Your call:)

Thanks for the reply. After reading your reply I have confirmed that it is NOT the dual voice coil sub (oops) but the MM2142. I will be using it with a pair of Magnepan SMGa's for mostly 2 channel music.

I suspect a sealed enclosure? I am using a Parasound HALO A23 amp and a Nakamichi CA-5 pre. My budget is probably around 4 - $500.00.

    Room is about 15' x 20'.

    Thanks again.

With that budget you could probably buy a HT sub that would work better. If you just want to do it for fun, then go to Parts Express and buy a 3-500 watt rms plate amp. Sealed is definitely the way to go. Build about a 1 cubic foot sealed enclosure for it, see how it sounds. They also sell sub enclosures to, but where's the fun in that? You may really like the end result, or you may not. If I were just trying to get what would be best for your set up, I would just buy a micropro, and be done with it(MP 1ks can be had for <$350). However, it would be fun project. Good luck:)

+1, you can get plenty of sub that is meant for HT use for that type of budget. Why mess around with something you may not be happy with and have to spend just as much to replace it? Even a PSW505 would be a good option for you and they run about $250 shipped, heck you could get two of them and call it good, lol. Like rally said it may be a fun project, but it's up to you. Good luck.
