Looks like a nice day trip. Back in the early 70's when I was in college at Milledgeville, they were a fairly popular local band. Those days are still a little fuzzy. "Statesboro Blues" is still one of the higher rated guitar licks around.

Any of you Georgia boys remember a band called Arnold Bean? They moved to Norman around 1970 and stayed a few years, good guys, pretty tight rockers.
They were all excited about their homeboys coming out with a LP soon.
    Then Idlewild South came out.
I think Gary is still out there playing somewhere.

Duane Allman's "bottle" slide technique which he FIRST used on "Statesboro Blues" along with his unusual fretting techniques are considered to be one of the most influential sounds of the Southern Blues Rock movement of the late 60's and early 70's. Allman's short career is still considered to be one of the greats of R&R history.

Duane was truly one of the great guitar virtuosso's who died way too young. When Eric Clapton saw Duane play he was so impressed he asked him join Clapton's band at the time Derek and the Dominoes. Duane did a few live gigs with them and appears on the Layla album but chose to stay with his brother in the Allman Brothers band until his unfortunate death in a motorcycle accident. That museum would be so cool to see.

The Allman Brothers at Filmore East is spinning right now...

Statesboro Blues IS one fine example of slide guitar playing...and may be the definitive sound of the Allman Brothers....along with "Whipping Post" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed".

Much like SRV...I would have loved to see how Duane would have improved his craft had he lived.

LoL... I have had a fist fight or two over the years regarding the guitar god status of Duane Allman. I ain't looking for one here. I actually love a couple of their tunes. I take issue with their seeming inability to end a song. I mean, endless masturbatory solos do not a god make in my book. I have heard all of their stuff. Countless times. Duane was, without a doubt, a fine picker and slide player. But they bore me to tears. And though I understand how people get emotionally attached to certain bands/tunes and believe me, this isn't meant as a personal attack on Duane or any posters in this thread, but I just don't think he was as good as everybody here thinks. I think his early demise made him a bit of a martyr. So be it. Don't hit me.

I'm sure there is some artist or group that you think totally rocks...and I think they suck.

Opinions are like ****...everyone has one.

Agreed. "Allman Brothers at Fillmore East" with it's three 20± minute tracks is on my Desert Island short list (ie: what albums would you want if stranded on a desert island)

Eric Clapton thought enough of his abilty to ask him to join him on a permanent basis after "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" was recorded.

Your opinion is your opinion...and that is fine. But I think you are in the minority...including many of those in the music industry. Duane was considered "one of the best" even before his untimely death.

I think the best accolades come from your peers and I've read and seen many of the great guitar players, both living and dead, express their appreciation for his fine playing. That, and my ears love it.

Edit...I've had a copy of Allman Brothers at Filmore East on 200 gram Quiex unopened for almost a year now. I think it's time to break it open, light a cuban and ENJOY.........
