I've got a friend with an xbox arcade version with no hard drive. He want's to get a hard drive, but doesn't have the cash to buy the "microsoft xbox hard drive". It seems like I remember you can use a PS3 to format a regular laptop hard drive? I have the old 40gig from my PS3 I can give him, so what all would be involved in making this work? Any help would be greatly appreciated:)
Sony 40" LCD
Sony DVPCX995V
Sony PS3(games/media server)
Sony PS2
WD TV Live with 3TB
Sanyo VCR
Marantz SR6003
Polk 11T(xover/RDO)
RM20 5 pack
OWM 5
DUAL Micro Pro 1000
Combastard Cable
Harmony One
When rapture comes, can I have your car?

That would work for a PS3 as it is friendly with 3rd party HDDs but to get a HDD to work with the 360 is a lot more involved and the drive size has to match those of the "official" price gouged ones that MS offers.

It's possible but you will need a WD drive I think. Read this

you dont exactly have to buy theres but the xbox will only register hard drive sizes they actually have (20, 60, 120GB) you also of course need to find a way to format it for xbox

I can format it in fat32 with my computer, but will have to keep it under 32gig I think, otherwise I can format the entire 40gig with my PS3, but if it has to be an "xbox" size I could just do two 20gig partitions I suppose:confused: Sounds like more trouble than it's worth to me though. I think I'm just gonna tell him to use a jump drive/external usb hard drive, or cough up the cash for the Microsoft drive..Thanks for the input guys!

I don't think USB drives can be saved to. They are read only on the 360. So you basically need a memory unit or hard drive.

    Toshiba 62HMX85
    Panasonic DMP-BD60
    Xbox 360 with HD-DVD
    Pioneer VSX-9130-TXH-K
    Polk Audio CSiA6
    Polk Audio RTi10's
    Polk Audio RTi4's
    Polk Audio RTi6's

That is correct. You will need an official storage device for save games, downloads, demos, DLC, etc. However, an external drive can be used to store media for playback on the console.
