Someone correct me if Im wrong, but wouldnt you get imaging problems with a 7.1 system regardless of room size if your not using the HD audio formats? I thought thats what 7.1 and above was designed for.

No, you wouldn't get imaging problems. You can use DPL-IIx to handle the rear surrounds, which steers the audio across the rear soundstage based on variances in level and phase (which is based on mixing standards for placing sound in the rear soundstage).

SVS 20-39CS+ subwoofer powered by Crown XLS1500
    Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player
    DarbeeVision DVP5000 video processor
    Epson 8500UB 1080p projector

    Go 5.1

I have a huge room 21x14 and have tried 7.1 with very minimal results. In my case it was not worth the extra $$$ for speakers or the space to accommodate the 7.1 setup.

Although, I have listened to systems with height added speakers. Such as, front low and front highs and have heard a difference.

Yeah, I'm really liking height channels with DPL-IIz. I tried Audyssey's DSX, but the heights were too obvious and in-your-face, whereas DPL-IIz is subtle until called for.

For me, 7.1's greatest advantage is with 5.1 video games. The extra steering across the rear has saved my butt on many occasions, because I can hear precisely where someone is behind me (especially helpful in online play). But as I said before, it's all about preference.
