I saw this trailer the other day. In my opinion there are some movies that should just not be remade. You can make it and give it a different name but why us the same karate kid name? This is will Smith's son and I am pretty sure that the elder is directing it. Gotta get the kid into showbiz one way or another I guess.

While the original was not any kind of cinematic masterpiece, it was nonetheless a movie that left a lasting impression on those who have seen it....even after more than 20 years after it was made. I mean, can we really picture anyone else other than Ralph Macchio and the late Pat Morita in their respective roles? I suppose this remake may attract those young enough not to have seen the original, but to those who have seen the original, such as myself, this remake is nothing more than a waste of money and time.

I'm no Martial Arts expert, but I'm baffled. This apparently is set in China and Jackie Chan's discipline is Kung Fu. Karate is a Japanese martial art. Maybe I'm over thinking it and should look at it for the entertainment value. I'll still see this when it comes out on disc and give it a chance.

Are you just confused that they're using the name "Karate Kid" when Kung Fu is not the same as Karate?

If that's the worst thing you can find with this flick then you're doing OK :)
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Well, the Karate Kid title is puzzling considering where the film is set and considering Jackie Chan's discipline is Kung Fu. Two entirely different martial arts. Perhaps all will be revealed in the film. Like I said, I'll give it a chance when it's released on DVD, bobby san1235. ;)

Yeah, I was wondering about the karate/kung fu angle as well.

Btw, Jackie Chan was trained as an acrobat for Cantonese opera when he was a child and later on as a stuntman. He is not a martial artist, unlike Jet Li.

No tot mention that Ralph Macchio thinks the remake of "The Karate Kid" is a mistake
From my personal view, the filling the void of what Mr. Miyagi was – and the magic of that character – is going to be the toughest task.

This is a mistake to remake this movie. It was horrible to begin with. The phrases of "Wax On" and "Wax Off" are like music groups with one hit wonders. You never hear of them again until something like this comes up.

I think it's funny how some people are so up in arms about this remake, like it was some kind of cinematic masterpiece to being with and they're afraid it's going to somehow get tarnished by the remake...

The original was OK, and I'm sure this one will be just as 'OK' as the first one. What, you think they're going to ruin the 'greatness' of the first one by cheesy acting, corny lines, and poorly choreographed fights scenes? :D

I doubt I'll go see it in the theater, but I'll check it out when it hits the shelves.

    Mercy is for the weak...

Truer words have naught been spoken.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I think you're missing the point, AsSiMiLaTeD.

It's not that the original "Karate Kid" was any kind of cinematic masterpiece, although Pat Morita's understated performance was excellent (and he received an Oscar nomination for it). For me, the original brought back good memories of my formative years and it was a good little movie that is enjoyable even today (I've seen it a couple of times within the last 6 months on AMC). There was no CGI or any major special effects....just a simple story done with appealing actors with good performances. In fact, the action in the original wasn't even the attraction....although Elizabeth Shue was :D

Of course, I'm pre-judging the remake. Perhaps it'll be good....but most likely it won't be.

I just don't see why they're even calling this The Karate Kid.

This looks essentially nothing like the first one. The storyline is completely different.

Why can't they just come up with a different name for it, instead of trying to badge it as a remake of The Karate Kid?

Well, lets see...call it a remake and have people **** about remaking it...or make something obviously similar to it and have people **** about how they're ripping off the Karate Kid?

I'd go with calling it a remake.
