Rock and Roll Reminiscing

20 April 2003 --- Letter Of The Week is “O”

For what this is about and some guidelines please click on the following link:

http://clubpolk.polkaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7234

Yes, it’s a long post, but please read, if you participate.

This week we are only discussing artists whose last name, and groups whose name begin with the letter “O”.

Note: The word “The” doesn’t count, so for example “The Allman Brothers Band” belongs in the "A's" discussion and not in the “T’s” (guideline #5).

When possible, please supply complete title, format, company, year and catalog number when posting recordings.

And so our 26-week odyssey continues…

Hope you come along for the ride… ;)

Outlaws -Best Of The Outlaws: Green Grass And High Tides - 1996 - This remastered CD replaced the earlier The Outlaws: Greatest Hits - 1882 - in my collection. Both are good CDs but the newer version has 16 tracks vs the earlier's 8 tracks. Both have the essential cuts of "There Goes Another Love Song", "Ghost Riders In The Sky", "Hurry Sundown" and the almost 10 min. guitar attack of "Green Grass And High Tides". The newer CD adds a couple of very good tracks like "Knoxville Girl", "Freeborn Man" and "Breaker Breaker". Both are excellent CDs with the remastered version cleaning things up a bit but not much. "Green Grass And High Tides" is a song that you put on...crank it up...and when it is over you just sort of collapse...it is that intense. I really like this song!

This is "Southern Rock" very much like The Allman Brothers, .38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd , etc... I never bought any of their regular albums and I guess it would be hard for them to beat these "Best Of ". If you like the genre...then one of these is a must have.

    Shack,
Way to kick off the O’s. I’ve got the old one and I think it’s enough for me, at least until I plug the hundred or so gaps in my collection we’ve ID’d to date…

    I’ll go with..
    Sinead O’Connor
I do not want what I haven’t got
Think what you will about her politics, her SNL demonstration and her hair (or lack of it), but the Lady’s got pipes, and a good bit of musical sense to boot (she produced the album). She proudly incorporates her Irish musical heritage into the melodies of some of the tracks here, and it works very well indeed. Great stuff…

All right, the O's are looking kind of lean so there's time to comtemplate such burning issues as: How long will it take Joe to ask Shack for his comprehensive review of the Osmonds?
    More later,
    Tour...

When we were in the "HHHH"s and discussing The Hooters, I mentioned that Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman were key figures on one of my favorite albums of the 90's. Well here it is:

Joan Osborne - Relish - 1995 - She gained a little fame with a pop hit titled "One Of Us". (What if God was one of us?). I liked that song which led me to buy the album. What I found was a little gem with rest of the CD very little like the hit song. Here was a "white girl sings the blues"...and it was very good...not quite Janis Joplin...but still very good. She doesn't have a great voice but she has a very good, huskey, gritty voice that goes well with the music on this album. My favorite is actually "Ladder" with "One Of Us" a close second. "St. Teresa", "Right Hand Man" and "Crazy Baby" are other very good cuts.

This one is not for everybody but as I said, I like this album very much and play it often. I use it for a demo quite a bit because it has a great range of sounds and textures and gives gear a good workout.

She has since released two albums: Righteous Love - 2000 - and How Sweet It Is - 2002. I was very disappointed with Righteous Love because it went away from what is her strength (blues/soul). How Sweet It Is is an album of nothing but covers from R&B and soul music from the 70s and 80s. Her cover of Dave Mason's "Only You Know And I Know" is pretty good but it will never live up to his version. I don't care for her cover of "War" and "The Weight" but I really do like "I'll Be Around" , "How Sweet It Is" and "Everybody Is A Star". None of her versions on this album are "better" than the originals because she covers a lot of really good music on this CD. Some are different in a good way and some are just ok. I can recommend this album because I like her work but I would really like to see her get back to the level of Relish and that means NEW music. I don't know why they went separate ways but I would like to see her hook back up with Hyman and Bazilian (who were also the force behind Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time")

Danny Elfman has scored countless number of movies. Including one of my all time favorites. The Nightmare before Christmas.

    Roy Orbison:

Another of my "this guy was there at the beginning" artists. His 1st hit was in 1956, called "Ooby Dooby." Between 60 & 65 he had 15 top 40 hits. Songs like "Only The Lonley" and "Mean Woman Blues." Of course he is best known for his #1 1964 hit "Oh Pretty Woman." The only thing I have by him is the dvd of his concert called "Roy Orbison, Black & White Night." Highly recomended! A great concert!

    Ozzy Osbourne:

I liked some of his stuff with Black Sabbath. I will leave this review to one of you metal guys. Heavyismymetal could write a good review of this one. Where is he? Even though he gave me a pretty good **** kicking back in the post about Iron Maiden I miss his insight.

Here are a couple that I am sure shack will get on here. #1 Tony Orlando. #2 Donny & Marie Osmond! You were right Tour. I was lurking in the shadows, waiting to spring the Osmonds on shack.

Joe, I surely hope that you are mentioning the name of Tony Orlando and Dawn and the Osmonds with a great deal of reverence...;)...In this time of conflicts overseas you see the results of Tony's handiwork all over this county (Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree!). I will say that the song took on more significance than they ever immagined it would.

And as for Donnie and Marie...well... these genre bridge crossing icons should be imortalized somewhere (I'm a little bit country...I'm a little bit rock and roll)...I dare say they are responsible for what Garth Brooks is today! Nuff said!

O-town? Had to look it up on AMG… man, what a line-up!!! Group Members: Ashley Parker Angel Trevor Penick Jacob Underwood Dan Miller Erik-Michael Estrada … Is that THE Erik-Michael…

    Tonite think I’ll talk a little about…
    Lee Oskar
    Before the Rain – Vinyl (1978 Elektra – 6E-150)
Lee is best known for his work as one of the original members of War of which he was a member since its days with Eric Burdon. To me Lee’s harmonica work was always one of the most striking things about War’s sound. “City Country City” may be the best example of his work with them. More on War in a dozen weeks or so…

Before the Rain is a very listenable album, and it’s generally considered to be Lee’s best of a half-dozen or so solo efforts. I like it quite a bit, but it never made me really want more. As good as Lee can make his harmonica sing, to me it’s just tough to build an album around a “lead” harmonica. If you’re a fan of War, you’d probably like this effort. If you’re not a fan of War…. Yeah like that could be the case…

Oh yeah I always liked the album cover, too... the back is another painting from the perspective of behind the guy sitting on the bench.

Orleans - I don't have this group on any format (I think I may have had an 8-track) but I remember the music well. "Still The One" and "Dance With Me" are the cuts that come to mind. More "pop" than "rock" but still decent stuff at the time.

Who doesn't like "Low Rider", "Cisco Kid", "Spill The Wine", "All Day Music" and "The World Is A Ghetto"? Even my 18 year old likes this stuff...but this discussion is for another day.

    shack.

I have a lot of reverence for what the yellow ribbons mean. Lets just say I wish someone besides Tony had cashed in on that action. I have nothing against his partners' "Dawn"

Donnie and Marie ROCK! (and they country.) I think they are imortalized in a little place just north and west of me. Branson Mo. They played there for awhile. They may still be there.

    Avelanchefan.

Thanks. Roy was a big influance on a lot of rockers. He toured with the Beatles in the U.K. I think Paul was quoted that he was trying to copy Roy's style when he did "Please, Please, Me."

While I am here I just as well get in another.

    Mike Oldfield:

"Tubular Bells." Used in the movie the Exorcist, this album was very successful. I still have it. I don't know if I could sit through the whole 49 minutes now. I think to do that you just have to be in the "right frame of mind." There were 30 instruments on this platter, all played by Oldfield. He did other stuff that was o.k. but I do not own any of those albums.

Shack, My point exactly. War is so listenable it's riduculous.

Orleans is next up for me. Two albums in the old collection here.

    How about Buck Owens?

Yes I know he is a little bit on the country side, but he has sold about a billion recordings. His 1963 song "Act Naturally" started a string of 15 number 1 singles. That is a pretty impressive run. Yes that is the same "Act Naturally" later done by the Beatles. Buck also hosted the hit show Hee Haw. The Hee Haw girls made watching the show worthwile.

Anybody have any albums by Old '97? I was told they were a good boogiewoogie Texas swing type band.

O.K. shack. Here is another for you.

Shaquille O'Neal. He made his 1st disc in 1993 titled Shaq Diesel, followed by the one called Shaq-Fu.
Shaq reviewed by shack. I can't wait for this one.

    The Offspring - Smash

It's the only Offspring album I have and definitely never get the others. I think Smash was their break through, afterwards pretty crappy. Pretty Fly for a White Guy?

We used to play Smash in the dressing room before High School Hockey games to get pumped up. Great days...good memories.

I love Roy Orbison and would add the excellent Mystery Girl
    cd.
I also loved Oingo Boingo and would recommend their
greatest hits . I'm a big Elfman fan and also love his
    score for Nightmare.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Ozzie Osbourne. What
would the O's be without Ozzie? I'm a bigger fan of Black
Sabbath than I am of Ozzie solo but he's done some excellent
    music on his own.
