Here is my Cabinet design. It will be an amp rack, video rack, Center Channel 'cabinet'. Here are the complete specs, and the final design characters to it. This is probally the final copy.

    With the shelves to the left of what appears to be the space for the TV, how do you plan on sitting amps and receivers in there without them pointing to the other wall, and hanging halfway off the shelf? I don't get that design...........

    Hmm, I can put a 40 pound weight in the corner if worst comes to worst, but I highly doubt it will tilt. The side shelf isn't hanging off the shelf, it is like this......If it does tilt, lean (which it shouldn't since it is pretty equally distributed on a flat surface and nothing leaning over. But if it does (which it could) it will be screwed down on to the Middle shelf. The TV weighs a good 70 pounds, if not more. The CSi40 weighs 24 pounds. Together is will be pretty equal weight. The TV and center will be put in before the amps too. So it will all be told when done.


    Also the entire shelf will be made of Solid wood that is 3/4 inch thick. The shelf itself will weigh over 100 pounds. The shelf isn't going anywhere. I can go on and on, with the bottum long shelf being over 20 inches it pretty much will keep itself on the other shelf, if it were a good 10 inches or less it might tilt. I still see no reason it should.

    Label what those spaces are for in your post just above this response. From all your other pics, they didn't show another piece of cabinetry below, but this last one does, so I guess that's where the amps and stuff are going. I'm just trying to understand what's going where.......

    Yeah, this is actually more convenient to me. As it is more to reach of my bed where I watch movies. So I can just go to the end of the bed and turn them off. Amp is already sideways on my shelf, no biggie.

    Amps I understand not needing to have face you, but if you're watching a movie.......how are you gonna be using your remotes if your DVD and VCR are facing away from where you're sitting?

    Their not exactly facing away from me, more the less at an angle. However chances are I won't put them there. They will probally end staying where their at and that will be a movie rack spot. The amps will be on the 3 top shelves. The bottum shelf will either hold the dvd player and vcr or movies. Who knows....

    Here is an angle of where I sit to where the amps, dvd player, vcr, etc could end up being.....

    I dunno.... I can be anywhere in my room, pointing the remote anywhere, and it works just fine. Gets worse as the batteries die.... but that's kinda "duh".

    Same here, except my VCR remote, it didn't work the day I bought the VCR! The receiver remote.....well.......I just have to make sure my hand or anything is not directly infront of the sensor and it works!

    Sid,
    Shelf height for your amps is too short at 7". Need at least three inches of air space above the amps to let 'em breath. Especially true if the back of their shelves are closed, which is what I think your drawing shows.
    Also keep your wiring in mind so that speaker runs and interconnects are not intermingling with AC cords. Especially want to avoid parallel runs.
    Otherwise looks pretty sweet.

    Man I just slept 2 hours and woke the el up and I can't go back to sleep! Just checking the boards, Tour, note the first pic the entire back is open. The amp will also stick out of the shelf a good bit, the pegs (legs of the amp) are 1 inch back from the front of the amp, and I am going to put the legs on the end of the 1.5" overhang, which will leave a good 2.5 inches hanging out of the shelf. The back will have bracing, but not fully enclosed.

    EDIT:worse comes to worse and it does have bad heating, I will install fans on each side of the shelf! But hopefully I won't have to do that. The amp is about 6 inches (the biggest amp). So, with a open back, open front, 2.5" sticking out the cabinet, I figured it would work. Right?:confused: Thanx for any reply.

    Well I am going to try to go back to sleep, skool tommorow. If I come back you know I didn't go back to sleep! Dang insomnia! DIE DIE DIE DIE!

    who is going to build this monster of a shelf anyway?


    what is the component depth? My mono blocks are deeper than any other amp(s) i have ever seen.. a full 18" deep. to deep for most cabinets. My Adcom amp is only 12" deep. easily fits into most spaces.

    A friend of mine I work with, he built my other shelfs. The depth of the amps are........11 inches ex-zachery

    I have seen a Mcintosh Tube Amp, it was atleast 1.5 feet wide, 1 foot tall, and about 2 feet in depth. It was a effin monster!

    Thanks man, when I made the design I couldnt find my tape measurer, so I went by the shelf's original designs. But I knew it wasn't exactly 36 so I put......around there! :lol: you think thats bad? lol, I was measureing for doors, and I can't read a tape measurer all the way (only 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, whole - My Dad and my friend tried to teach me while we built houses, I just could never get it) anyway, I put line 1, 2, 3, 4, instead of the measurements! lol! I tell ya my friend got a kick out of that! Anyway, I wish I could go back to sleep! :supermad: Dang Insomnia! :supermad:

    New Design...lol! I was figuring it all out, and the amp rack would be a very rediculous height. So I just cut out the amp rack all together and decided I would just stack the amps and leave them out in the open. Ohh well!

    Nah I was just bustin yer chops because there is no way someone can make a precise measurement if all he knows is around 36"... :D
    I have a suggestion:
    Your system isn't always going to be a bedroom system is it? I read all the time about you wanting to buy it now so you can enjoy it later. I Think that what you should do is look at building a real a/v rack and possibly a TV stand (which could come later I guess, due to space limitations) That way when you move out it could pull duty in your living room/dorm/refrigerator box/whatever and not have to be on a dresser. As it is, you can use that desk later, but really, the cash you sink into this behemoth might go to waste if you plan on using it for a long time (as you always say you will, so I guess its safe to assume so.)
    I am on sort of the same track- trying to put together a nice home theater now so when I am out of college in a few years, and having the time of my life struggling to pay bills and student loans for the first time, I wont have to worry about not being able to watch a DVD on a nice setup unless I crawl back to dad. I would look into the "Flexy Rack", its a really cool design and is dirt cheap, and looks great. I built one to hold all my components and like it a lot.

    Well I can only plan for the future so much. My Current shelf is fixing a center channel problem I will be stuck with for atleast 3 years. When I move out, the bottum part will probally go in my house as a desk. It is perfect for it. The wall shelf will be mounted above it. The middle part will be used in the garage to hold stuff. The shelf I am getting built will find a use to. If it looks bad, I will get it restained. No biggie, but this is not my future home theatre rack. My Future home theatre rack will be built into the house when I get it built. lol.

    That design of rack is exactly what I was looking to do with my system, except for it being 6 feet tall. Yours looks well built....good job. To me, (at least with the height I'm looking to go), it didn't sppear to be an entirely stable build, but also, I think that I'd get irritated at having to adjust the hell outta the shelves by those nuts. True it would be a one time thing, but it would get on my nerves i think........

    Actually, that site isnt mine, just an example for sid. I was thinking the same thing you were about it not being stable, but honestly you would be surprised. Mine is also 6 feet tall. I have 4 half inch all-thread rods, and one inch thick veneered MDF for the shelves. When you tighten the nuts down, it becomes very sturdy and stable, I would bet that each shelf could hold a ton of weight.
    Look into it- it was fun to build and looks awesome to me. As far as the thousands of adjustments, it isnt all that bad- if you start measuring from the top of the rods down (because the rods arent all exactly the same size) and measure all four sides on each shlef, it will be almost exactly level. After you have measured and hand tightened all the shelves take a level to it, and finish it up. Really easy stuff, will take you less than 2 hours if you dont treat or stain the wood or MDF you use for the shelves.
