It reminds me of when AV's first came out: They were lightweight, effective, and you couldn't much tell that they were operating. Like anything else, try it for yourself. Last review I read had it ranked better than the pay-for-use AV's in terms of effectiveness, the lighter weight is just a bonus, and it's free. No need to run multiple programs, although I also run Winpatrol with it. . no brainer.

With AVG paid version you have to know a little to install it, otherwise it will be a resource hog. You will also need to spend a little time to configure the firewall.
If it was me running a netbook, I would most likely go with Debian and install the base without the desktop. Then I would pick one of the light window managers and manually (well, with aptitude) add the necessary graphical components. That approach is not for everyone, for those who don't want to take that task maybe Ubuntu Netbook Remix:

Since you said that, I have to ask... what are you planning to use the netbook for?
I also assume it is preloaded with XP. Disable themes and all the other services you don't need. Clean up the startup selection (Run -> msconfig). Uninstall all the unnecessary pre-installed software.
How big is the harddrive or is it a solid state drive?
My wife bought us 2 Gateway LT2016U with XP for ultra low cost PC's, Intel Atom processor, 1GB memory, 160GB HDD, it also has the built in 3G WAN.
I know these are nothing special but it is more than I/we need.
I would like to have my itunes on it word processing, spreadsheet, internet.
I am going to download AVG and spybot unless someone thinks otherwise and wipeout Norton, windows media player, internet explorer(we use mozilla), it has an ebay shortcut, it has a 60 day trial for Microsoft Office and microsoft works.
My wife and I use computer to surf the net and some lite duty word processing and spreadsheeting:). I also want to clean up my wifes old laptop for our girls to use and try to use my old laptop to run itunes for my whole house system because my Roku soundbridge just took a dump. I have also been toying with the idea to get a apple tv. Honestly I am way over my head. We also have a 150GB HDD on our network.

Whatever you chose, make sure to completely uninstall and remove Norton first. Restart the computer, then install. My vote after 3 years of experience on my wife's desktop and a windows laptop is AVG.Review Site_ (((AudioPursuit)))

In that case find out if the 3G card has drivers for Linux. With those activities I see no other reason not to switch. If you must use iTunes and not some other media player (Amarok in Linux is excellent), you can install iTunes in Linux as well (although through Wine).
If you post the 3G card model I can find out if it has open source drivers or not. I suspect it does as netbooks usually are built with hardware that has crossplatform support. -
Sami,
I think it is a Qualcomm HS-USB modem 9212. Although I don't know anything about Linux.

Wrong....my netbook came with Vista installed. I now run Windows 7 with no problems. Using Aero as well. A power user's netbook for sure. Why go Linux when you can run Win 7 no problems.

If it does not come preinstalled with Win7 then there are quite a few reasons why, starting but not ending with cost. -

Seems like there is a solution to get it to work with Linux so that should not be a deal breaker.
I would suggest downloading either Ubuntu 9.10 or the Ubuntu Netbook Remix, or both. You can either run them with LiveCD which means you (in netbook case) create a bootable USB stick and boot it from that. You can use the OS without installing and if you like it, you can install it as dualboot with Windows. You can then go back and forth on Windows and Linux without a problem and decide over time which one to keep. If you give Linux some time you will notice it is a more advanced OS and offers quite a few benefits over Windows, especially if you have multiple computers at home. As an added benefit you won't need antivirus.
Do not wipe out the Windows install from the netbook, just do yourself a favor that pays off in the future and install Linux on the side. -
I don't think you can wipe out IE, You do need it for manual updating alsoMillerLiteScott wrote: »My wife bought us 2 Gateway LT2016U with XP for ultra low cost PC's, Intel Atom processor, 1GB memory, 160GB HDD, it also has the built in 3G WAN.

A computer or netbook with a 12 inch screen I do not consider a netbook. None the less newer products can have newer stuff on them. Win 7 to me is a waste on something as small as that. Could run ten times faster with linux or xp.HT setup
