Monitor 70 with Monitor 30 or 40 for rear surround?

Hi All,

I recently purchased Monitor 70s (bi-amped) and a CS2 for the center. They are powered by a Pioneer 1019AH. I live in a condo and I am not considering a sub at the moment since I do not want to disturb my neighbors since I am on the top level.

I mainly watch blu-ray movies, and I am ok with the bass for now with my current setup. Since I do not want a sub at this time, will the monitor 30s not match up, in which Monitor 40s are the better choice?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Oh and my room is 18' x 12'.

I just got my 70's in today and there back by 40's bookshelf thats what polk calls for with the 70's.

Thanks for the reply and info.

I would have to put my rears on my end tables in living room. It's good to know they are recommended by Polk for the 40s as rears. My only concern would be if they are too big, since that appears to be some of the comments on newegg that I read. Especially if I put them on my end tables which could dwarf my lamps.

Welcome to the forum kalmar

You would like to have surrounds a few feet above ear level so placing them on tables isn't the best idea. If you can, try wall mounting, speaker stands, etc.

If you are wall mounting, the monitor 30 is only option since there are no holes on the back of the 40s.

I'm running M40's as my rears, and they are awesome! Right now they're sitting on a pair of SDA 2B's that I'm using as speaker stands.

I am also considering very simialr setup (M70+CS2+M40). I didnt know that M40 were not wall mountable! I may end up going with M30 now. Thanks.

Unfortunately the 40's are not wall mountable, but I will say this. If there is any way possible you can work the 40's GET THEM!! They are hands down a much better speaker than the 30's (nothing personal, lol) and well worth the extra $30 or $40 IMHO.

Why not get another pair of Monitor 70s as surrounds? They would look nice with 4 imposing towers, plus it would be easier to sell the Monitor 70s when it is time to upgrade to higher class speakers.

Quite a difference in price though, and space may be an issue too. 4 Monitor 70's would look pretty bad@$$ though, lol.

I really think 4 M70s are overkill...and would not go bigger than M40s...what exactly do people think is carried on surround speaker tracks--not a whole lot...cetainly not enough for a full range speaker?

I was looking around for advise on rears and stumbled across this thread. I currently own a Cambridge Sound set system. 2 Tower ll's and two bi-direction/bi-pole(?) speakers as rears. Also a 12" sub...

2 Polk 70's will be delivered today and a CS2 on Friday... I was thinking of putting my Tower ll's as rears..... or buying more 70's... anyone have any experience to know if i can just live with the Tower ll's??? will they work for surrounds?

btw, i play a lot of music in 5 channel stereo. so was thinking having 4 towers would be best..

I have had both the 30's and 40's as my surrounds. The 30's sounded a little to thin for me. The 40's were great though.

If one was to opt for towers as rears, are they high enough off the floor?

I run Monitor 70's as my fronts and TSi 500's as surrounds, and they sound awesome. I used to run Monitor 40's as my surrounds and they sounded good as well, IMHO the towers are much easier and you don't have to worry about wall mounting or stands. Timbre matching the surrounds isn't as important as the front three, and since you already have the Tower ll's, give them a shot. If you aren't crazy about it, then try the 70's (if you can get your hands on them that is, lol)
