    Yes but before that all there was was just left and right even on receivers that say Dolby digital and surround sound. When I was younger I saw a lot of them.

    Start on the last paragraph of that page and read forward, and you'll see how they added multiple signals to one line to create surround sound. I'm sticking with my original answer of "it's magic"... When you have to start using letters and number together and drawing multiple diagrams with arrows and wavy-lines and ****... It might as well be magic in my mind.
