Hi all ...
I fumbled upon this forum last week when I was searching for Polk Audio. I'm glad I did. I'm planning to do a basic HT setup.
I found new Denon 1910 AVR for 397.00 at Electronic Expo. Any thoughts on how it is against Onkyo tx-sr607.
Thanks

I had an Onkyo 606, and have listened a number of times to the Denon. I prefer the Denon sound, but I think it is personal preference. They are, as far as I know, about the same level of machine. No pre-outs, decent power. I think if you are looking for more features, go Onkyo, if you are looking a bit higher quality, go Denon. Both are considered fine companies.2 Channel/HT:

Thanks pycroft for the input.
Setup I've in my mind is AVR, Monitor 70 (Front) and CS2 for now. May be subwoffer. I'm use to it mainly for watching BD movies and games. I put a budget of 1K to get it started.
I'll go to the store to listen to them and see what I like.
Thanks -
Sounds like you are off to a good start. Depending on what AVR you choose, you should be able to get them all and still have a little cash for a sub. The 505 is a good entry level sub for around $250 shipped from Newegg, you may have to stretch the budget a little, but you will be happy with the results. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'd agree with pycroft to an extent...if it weren't for (Dan's) Mantis's complaints about the recent reliability of Denons. Dan installs HT and other kinds of Audio systems and has said that he's seen higher failure rates in Denons of late!
The Denon and Onkyo's do sound a bit different. The Denon is 'supposedly' warmer..but not by much IMO. And the Onkyo may be more 'dynamic', i.e., better for HT?
But there is nothing like listening. I own both myself!

I agree that a sub is very important. I think the CS2/Monitor 70's have good bass, but won't make up for a lack of bass in a subwoofer - espeically for HT use.
Good luck and keep us posted!

You guys are really helpful. Thanks.
I made my mind on Monitor 70 and CS2 speakers. I'm lurking around for decent AVR within $400. I read about heat issue with 607. Is heating a problem for most receivers?
505 doesn't have hdmi ports. I would need hdmi ports to connect ps3. I found Onkyo HT-R560 for $200. What are the main specs to see in a AVR?

I got my HK AVR 354 for less than 400 on the Ebay refurbished store. I think that's the best you will get, and in my opinion, better than the other two choices. I was looking for something warmer, and that played digital music better. I was 2/2. If you want it for only HT, a higher level model Onkyo may also fit the bill.2 Channel/HT:

Onks just run hot, plain and simple. My 806 gets pretty toasty after a good night of Blu Ray watching and some Modern Warfare 2, lol. Keep it well ventilated and maybe a fan and you will have nothing to worry about. $400 is a pretty tight budget for an AVR with the bells and whistles you are after, but it can be done. For example the Onkyo TX-SR806 is getting harder and harder to find with the release of their new NR line and is about $650 now, a few months ago you could find it for around $500-$550. Long story short, if the 607 is the one you are after and the heat issue is your only turn off, keep it well ventilaed as I stated earler and you will be fine. It will do everything you want it to do and is in your price range. Good luck and keep us posted.
