The barking dog delima

I have a neighbor with a dog who barks continuously when they are gone. Its really excessive. A few months ago they started leaving him out all evening while they were gone and I finally got fed up with it after one night he was doing his thing until 3:30 AM and left a note on their door. After talking to them the next day I felt confident they would take care of the problem, and they did. However, this past week he has been out there barking all evening several different times. At least it isn't alll night! Yesterday I tried a trick I read about. I recorded him and played it back while he was barking so as to confuse him. It didn't work so don't bother trying it. I left the recording on their door step. Could it be they really don't know and didn't believe me? The dog is perfectly good while they are home but as soon as they leave he starts up. When a car pulls up in front of their house he shuts up for awhile, maybe a half hour and then starts again. One time he went for 9 hours stopping a few times when his voice gave out. Any suggestions on what to do about this without being a dick?

Talk to the neighbors a couple more times. If they still don't do anything about it, call the po-po. That's disturbing the peace, right there.

Or... you can spend the money on one of those electronic pitch thingies and point it towards their lawn.

    Paintball gun maybe? :p

I work for my local Sheriff's department. And there are things that can be done if the dog is continually disturbing the peace. If you have talked to the neighbors and they won't take care of the problem. I think that is your next step, making noise complaints. Enough complaints and the owners will be forced to do something. Down side is you might have a pissed off neighbor to live next to.

Get this. I own it and it will shut every dog up in the area you are able to hear.

That looks pretty reasonable. How long does it take to start working?

Don't know about your local laws, but here in Sierra Vista, Az; the third phone call to the police lands the dog in the pound.

These ignorant people need to get control over these animals. A dog that barks excessively is typically showing that he/she has not been dominated yet--and feels they are still the alpha. Of course, we can't get most people to discipline their brats anymore, good luck with a dog.

People who don't want to take the time to properly train their animals, should not get an animal.

I think it depends on the age, will and wit of the dog in some ways. My female dog shutup pretty quickly, but my neighbor's dog took about a week to two weeks to completely figure it out. I split the cost of this thing with my neighbor. We both HAD dogs that would upset the neighbors. Now, they only bark if someone is at the door.

Occasional barking is normal and to be expected--it's what dogs do. It's the excessive barking that needs to be dealt with by owners.

Our dogs would bark when something strange was going on, but they didn't bark very often, and also didn't bark at the front door. They were trained not to. On the rare occasion when they would bark at night, we would immediately quiet them down.

This only happens when they leave and the dog is left alone. I think it is experiencing "separation anxiety disorder" from what I read about it. Yeah, obviosly you expect dogs to bark in the ordinary manor.

I was thinking about suggesting they put in a doggie door so he could go inside but I don't know if that would put an end to it. Would he go inside or just keep barking?

At least he would be barking inside maybe. The laws up here are a joke. You will have to call animal control and give a complaint, they will issue 1 warning to the people and if it still happens they will mail you a complaint form and then they will issue a citation for these people to appear in court where they get like a $100 fine. Thats it, you cannot do anything from the time the complaint is filed to the court date. and all they will ever do is issue a $100 fine no matter how many times a year it happens and how many people complain about it. I went through the same thing and it was such a joke. I hate inconsiderate jerks with noisy dogs and kids and are able to just tune it out and don't care who its offending. Good luck!

I have a co-worker with the same problem and she doesn't know what to do either. Maybe I'll try the "Dog Silencer Pro" that SS suggested if it continues. The only thing I worry about is it says initially the dog will bark more until it figures it out but I'm thinking it can't bark more than constantly anyway so what does it matter.

Heh heh, I found a dog barking forum.

Last time i had to deal with this.... (my neighbor WAS a dick, so i didn't care) I called the cops. They wouldn't do anything.

So, i bought a $30 megaphone at Harbor Freight. Next time the dog woke me up at night, i leaned out the window, which was approximately 10 feet from their house, and yelled "WOOF WOOF WOOF MOTHERF***ER" or "PLEASE SILENCE YOUR CANINE, INFIDEL."

Or pretty much whatever i was in the mood to do.

They got the hint pretty quick after that.

I did something similar to this when I lived in an apartment once. The upstairs folks were loud love makers.
And they knew we could hear them. I know they knew because I mentioned being able to hear their TV in their bedroom occasionally, hoping the guy would take a hint.

    They got a lot louder...

So my RatShack megaphone and I sat up screaming and moaning like the fat **** upstairs for about 10 min after one of their trysts... I added in some "f*** me harder you sweaty whale!!!" and some "put it in my blackhole of a giant ****!" and some other things...

My wife wasn't sure how well that would turn out for us... but it worked jsut fine...
