Conrad Johnson PV-7 Tube Choice

I know a few of you in the group own or have owned The Conrad Johnson PV-7 and I just purchased one that should arrive just after Christmas.

I'm interested in learning about tube combos that have worked for you in the PV-7.

I'm also enjoying a vintage Dynaco PAS-3 that uses the same main 12AX7 tube. I have a strong matchced quad of Mullard Blackburn's on the way and I think 3 will go into the CJ and never make it into the PAS. I will also be able to pull strong Telefunken Diamond smooth plates out of the PAS--3 and try them in the PV-7.

The mystery for me is the 12AT7.

What are some of your favorite 12AT7 tubes? Do they perform synergistically with certain 12AX7's, or can they be considered pretty much independent of one another?

    My favorite 12AT7 is the Mullard CV4024, but I've no idea how it would work in your C-J.

    That's a great coincidence! I guess we will be finding out.

    Last night I was doing research and ended up buying a nice strong matched pair of 1960's British made Mullard military issue CV4024/M8162 "R" code tubes from the Mitcham, Surrey, England plant with the rare shield logo.

    I'm really looking forward to getting everything in place after the holidays . . .

    --- Conrad Johnson PV-7
    --- 3 strong matched Mullard Blackburn 12AX7's
    --- 2 strong matched Mullard CV4024/M8162's

    I'm also hedging my bet and picking up a matched set of slightly lower output 1960's Amperex 7062 D-getter's.

    After the holidays I'll report on how things sound. :)

    Actually, there are two versions of the CV4024's, the M8162 is the premium version and is what I use. I hope they work for you as well as they do for me.

    I guess even a blind squirrel finds and acorn every once in a while. :D

    I know the PV-7 is not quite world-class, but I think it's a great step in the right direction for me. If the Mullard's don't work out I will put a fair price on them in the FS thread and move on.
