Hello
Could someone please explain to me what you mean when stating that certain subs are better for music and some better for HT application?
What the diff? and will the casual listener know the difference?
Thanks

    IMO, for music:
Fast, textured bass that is of high fidelity and blends nicely.

    For HT:
As loud as possible but not as much attention to sound quality.

    I prefer # 1.
    polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves
    polkaudio 255c-RT Inwalls
    polkaudio DSWPro550WI
    polkaudio XRT12 XM Tuner
    polkaudio RM6750 5.1

Front projection, 2 channel, car audio... life is good!

A quality sub will do both nicely..

    +1 on what brydson says.

I am sure some entry level or mid level subs do better at one or the other but if you get into high end subs they will do great on either.

    Make that a +2.

But as $$ is one of the common compromises many of us have to live with and go with entry level - mid level subs we can get one that does one thing good, so we pick a priority; music/HT. By doing so if you lean to HT you generally get more usable dB at lower frequency but give up some "speed" and control. Or if you are more interested in music you loose some of the low end stuff but tend to get more accurate tone, with enough speed and control to produce the different variety of bass notes thrown at it blending with the front speakers to reproduce music, not just boom and rumble.

But a really good designed sub, sealed or ported can do both very well.

So the HT sub is more for the "BOOM" and the music sub is better with "sound".
What might one recommend in the entry/mid range. I guess I would say more so for music and not as much HT.
    Lets say under $400

So would it be a good idea to have 2 subs and a switch for back and forth? Or just get a well built music sub? Do not mean to hijack just more details into the subject at hand.

Getting two subs depending on what you're going to be listening to, assuming that they're both integrated into the same setup, is a waste of money. Take the money you'd spend on both subs, and put it towards one nice one, or continue to save for one that does both well. :)

I think you'd be able to get into the DSW Micropros at that price. The 1000 is a great music sub, but may not have satisfactory extension for movies at higher volume.

You MAY be able to get into a Mirage Omni S12 or S10 Prestige at that price point, and i've found that they're great dual-duty subs on a modest budget. The S12 leans a little more towards HT, and the S10 Prestige is a great musical sub in my experiences.

There's all kinds of stuff on the used market for that price range, though... Klipsch, Velodyne, might even be able to score an SVS.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

keep in mind almost ALL movies contain music. Most have quite a bit of it...
