Gents-
Any opinions as to using 1 pair of speakers for two functions. Want to set my Dad up with a system. He likes the sound of my 800i's. I was thinking of getting him 4 of them, using 2 for A side 2 for B side for music. And also wiring the B side for rear surround effects. All he would have to do is switch the receiver from both A and B to just A during Home Theater, so the B side would then just become surround.

If the 'rear' 800's are hooked up (wired) to both 'b' and 'rear', chances are it won't work, on either.
The amp will sense power coming back through the line, and go into protect mode. You can get around this, with a small project box, and some double throw, double pull switches...and a little soldier.
Good to see you hooking your dad up, that's greatness. Why 4 800's for music though? 2 Should do just fine.
Details brotha, details.....

Russ-
Try as I have to embrace the 2 speaker concept for music, for it would be cheaper, and make the little lady happy, I find I cannot.
I place my 1000i's facing the sweet spot from the front, and face my 800i's at the rear 90 degrees from the front and.....I'm surrounded, I'm
bathed in music that doesn't seem to be coming from any direction. The 1000's fill out the bass,
the 800's focus the mids and...I love it.
I thought since the 800's don't have amps of their own, there would be no signal cross. Since Dad is less concerned with
maximum bassage, and Mom would appreciate the smaller cabinet, I figure the 800's are the ticket.

...Lets get down to the nitty gritty...
What is Pops gonna be powering the 800's with? Only thing that really concerns me is the amp(rec) going into protect mode if you are trying to use the 800's as REAR and B channels, even if not at the same time.......
I know bass may not be as important to good ole dad, but, let tale a bit.....I can see RT55 'B' speakers and a 350 sub....
I'll be back on the forum later tonight, or tomorrow morn...
Cheers,

Hi:
You can get a speaker selection box that will do what you want to do. Connect the speaker surround output to one set of imputs on the box, connect the B output to the other imputs on the box. Connect the output of the box to the speakers. That way you can switch back and fourth. However, when you want to use both A and B you will have to have both A and B active on you receiver. This will work just fine.
Make sure you get a speaker selection box that has a wattage rating to match your receiver.

Sounds good, at least I hope so. I wonder about speaker switchers, I mean I'm of the opinion the more connections in your line the weaker the signal, but I guess if you got a decent one the loss would be small.
BTW Russ, He's using a Sony ES receiver, 110 watts per channel.

As far as 'buying' a switch, you are going to have to spend a little money. El Cheapo rat shack switch will NOT work. I know this from experience, thats why I suggest you build your own, to save $$$.
Good luck with pops, enjoy.

Hello Luc,
Thanks for the interesting post, nothing beats giving some great sound to someone, especially your dad. You'll need a good quality speaker selector box, such as the Adcom GFS3. But you'll be connecting it in reverse. Instead of the single input to the receiver going to two pairs of speakers, you'll wire it backwards. Your receiver's "B" connection will go to the first speaker on the GFS3, the "surround" channel will go to the second speaker connection on the box. Then the input of the GFS3 will go to the pair of RT800i. Working in reverse, you will be able to pilot either of the two outputs to the single speaker connection. Remeber to make sure that button "1" is off before turning on button "2". Maybe a little note right on the front of the Adcom?
Of course your father might just like having the four speakers in a normal surround sound, where the second pair of speakers produce the ambient information. The Yamaha DSP modes, "classical" "church" etc sound pretty good if used in moderation.
I hope this is helpful information.
