Guys-
I have a Mitsubishi rear projection TV (WS-55813) It has a DVI imput that says it will output 1080i. I recently bought a Oppo BDP-83 dvd player, which has a HDMI output.
I bought a hdmi to dvi cable and hooked it up, choose the same imput/output on the tv and the dvd player, but no picture. I hook up component and I get the picture, but at 480p.
Help me Mr. Wizard!

Do you have the Oppo set to output 1080p? You may have to change it to 1080i. Also try 720p to see if it will work...Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

Bingo!
You may have to hook via component or composite to get to the setup menu.-Kevin

How OLD is your DVI...if it does not comply with HDCP standards that HDMI-DVI cable won't work period. Certainly try the suggestions above...but if they don't work it's a handshake problem due to HDCP--High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection!

You hit the nail right on the head. I have the same exact setup as the OP...my Oppo BDP-83 going straight to my older Sony LCD via an HDMI/DVI combo cable. It's not as issue with the Sony.
This is right out of the Oppo manual (pg 11): HDCP stands for High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection. The HDMI output of the OPPO Blu-ray Disc player uses HDCP to encrypt the digital audio and video content. The TV needs to support HDCP so it can decrypt the content and properly display it.
Check your TV manual to see if it meets this standard...if it doesn't, I'm afraid you're goung to have to use componet."2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up. -

Yeah, good catch cnh. I hadn't considered the age/compliance of his set.-Kevin

Yes, I did set it to 1080i, still no picture, I will try 720p, but my tv doesn't list that as an option.
thanks,

Hmmm..... you may be on to something here, I'm sure it's an older version of DVI due to the age of the set. I will try what the others recommended and report back.
thanks!

Reread post #5 & page 11 of the Oppo manual. You're beating your head up against a wall. You need to find out if your TV can support HDCP. If not you're out of luck. The issue is not with the combo cable or the Oppo...it's your TV's capability. And it has nothing to do with either 1080i, 1080p."2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up.

If it has component inputs then of course, that is the solution. Maximum resolution of 1080i of course. Good luck and let us know how it works out.-Kevin

There is no mention of HDCP anywhere in the TV manual.
So I guess I upgraded to a "better" dvd player with no real advantage over my current Onkyo SP-1000.
Thanks for clearing this up for me guys!
I wish the people at Oppo had been more upfront about this possibility.
I drove over to their facility to pick up my DVD player with my TV manual in hand,
and asked them point blank if this would work.
I was told as long as I had a DVI, "no problem".

Yeah, you will not get the benefit of the ABT processor. Are you within the 30 day return? You will lose only the cost of shipping.-Kevin

Yes, it's only been 2 weeks. I didn't know they had a 30 day return policy, thanks for the heads up.
I may buy this unit again, down the road some when I'm up for a new TV, but it's not this Christmas.

Send that puppy back and score a cheap player with decent upscaler/deinterlacing.
Merry Christmas!-Kevin
